The time was around the mid to late 70's through the early 80's. The location was West Allis Wisconsin. At the time the tavern league was called, The Greater Metropolitan Pool League. I played in this league for about 10 years. During this time every week we played this one team a older gentleman would come to watch his 40 - 50 ish year old son compete. Someone would make what we thought was a tough or good shot he would mumble, " anyone could make that shot."
Being young, maybe 20 something, I was a good shot maker; good eyes on small tables.
Back to this unknown older gentleman. After several years of hearing him mumble under his breath I made a shot that brought the house down as they say. For the first time in years he mumbles, Nice Shot Young man. So I turn to my team captain and ask, "just who the F is this guy!
My captain who at the time was our plant manager said, that's ________ _____! One of the best players in the nation at one time. Everyone including myself stared in shock when his name was mentioned. We all heard it in pool lore stories.
Well I've asked almost everyone for years who this older man could have been as I can not recall his name to save my life. He was short, maybe 5'4" - 5'7", piercing blue eyes, and a heavy or thick build. I would guess his age to be around late 60's to mid 70's at that time; could have been older. That would mean he was born around 1900 give or take.
Anyone have a clue?
Thanks
