Different shaft, or completely different cue?

I am looking for a decent billiard setup, and I'd prefer to just get a different shaft, but not sure how easy, common, or effective it is.

I shoot with a Schon, and have the Schon shaft, and a 314. I'd been using the 314 for it, but something just doesnt seem right. I like the less deflection aspect but it seems i can get more action (esp draw) with a plain jane house cue.

What are your opinions on it? I dont play (pocket billiards) with the 314 - and I'd like to keep my billiard shaft seperate from playing cue. Also, tip suggestions for said shaft? My poor moori is getting flat pretty quick.

Thanks gents.

I was playing with mori medium tips, but switched to a brand that I believe is called "Wizard", which is a layered tip. The Wizard medium feels pretty close to the Mori mediums. I have not played with many tips for carom but I prefer the Wizard over a Le pro tip, and a single layered Buffalo tip. Hope this helps.

Today I visited a friend of mine and his town has a billiard hall with a heated Verhoeven carom table in it. My intention was not to play billiards but I ended up playing a few hours before heading home. Since I did not bring my carom cue with me I played with a house cue. I observed that it felt like it is easier to draw and control the amount of action and speed of the balls with the carom cue then with the house cue I was playing with, I was mostly practicing gathering shots. I had a difficult time coping and adjusting for the House cue. It may have also been that the tip was really in bad shape on the house cue. When I was getting the balls to draw with the house cue it usually meant I over hit the first object ball which meant I overpowered to get the draw effect and the balls didn't gather like I wanted them to. I can hit soft with my carom cue, get the necessary draw action to make the carom, and control the first ball to get it back and gathered with the other two balls.

A couple of months ago I took a couple of with some sort of LD shaft and it was better than a standard pool shaft so this would be the cheap way out. Having someone build you a billiard shaft for your Schon may be the next option but many pool cues have a small joint diameter which would mean that the shaft might come in a little shorter. That aint all bad either most carom cues are a little shorter anyway. Other than that, you're off to making a bigger decision. In the end, if you stay with the game a dedicated cue is the real answer. Of course you knew that already didn't you?

As far as draw is concerned for one if you're a pool player you'll need to explore the outer limits a little more. Plus it stands to reason with the balls being 25% heavier than a pool ball it a little harder to get there. Theres not a whole lot I can do with a pool ball that I can't do with a carom ball. You just gotta play around with the extremes.
