We have alot in common...
Wiggly,
Welcome back! I, too, have been absent from the pool world for over 20 years and came back two years ago. Pehaps we have the same problems.
Years ago, I shot with Richard Black cues. I have since given and sold them and now realize my mistake..lol. I purchased a Joss but was not too happy with it. A year later, I bought a Schon and really like it. As for the tables, I shoot predominately on Brunswick Gold Crowns but do occassionally shoot on a Diamond. The problem here is "No one shoots straight pool." I can't find a straight pool player who doesn't have an AARP Card.
Last year, I went to an older pool hall in Wheeling, WV. To my surprise, it was under the new owership of John Schmidt (Mr. 400). What a joy to watch him run 150 to 200 balls at a clip! This really fueled the fire. I again tried to play straight but was not having much success in making runs. I would usually run anywhere between 7 to 20 and then have a case of "Cranial Flatulance." I, also, read books on 14.1, most notably the one by Capelle (Good Book). Another one by Capelle is Practicing Pool that helped me out some.
My problem or problems is.... well, time has taken its toll. Eyes...no good. I have no endurance but I am building this up. My first rack or so sounds like someone walking on popcorn packing with all the snaps, crackles, and moans. I am not 25 anymore...lol.
As for practicing, I am doing something that has helped my game. I start with 14 balls racked and place the cue and 15th in a position for a breakout. After letting it rip, I shoot until I miss. When I miss (which is often), I look at what is left on the table. I then pick the object ball in relation to the cue that would give me the best breakout shot. I then rack the balls leaving the chosen ball and the cue stand. As of yet, I am averaging in the 20's but have gone as high as 40 on a run. Not much of a record, I know, but it has been an improvment.
Best of luck to you, Sir!
