diy lathe motor

Prior to buying my "real" lathe, I went to numerous places for "Sewing Machine" motors, mostly sewing machine repair stores. They cost $15-20 each. Most are about 1/10 hp and easily bog down. I burned up about 6-8 of them.

That looks like a standard 5000 rpm sewing machine motor. 5000 rpm is much too fast to spin a shaft directly as is being done there. More than likely it is a 1/15 or less HP. The stand looks like somehting made to go under the motor that would not come with the motor. These types of motors make good wrap motors by using a double pulley system to slow the speed down and increase torque, but I think they are a little weak and way too fast for what it appears it is doing in the picture. Just go ahead and buy yourself a single speed 1725 rpm 1/4HP larger motor and use it to drive the shaft if you are wanting to do what is in the picture. Try a search for Surplus Center for small motors.

Ebay.

I got two of them. One is next to me at work as we ...er... speak. One I've connected to a VARIAC and a foot pedal to slow the speed down to a crawl if I want. A sewing machine motor is usually a universal motor (serial DC), so you can do this.

I also bought one that has an integrated foot pedal. This is no good for wraps because the speed is very difficult to control, but would be fine for shaft turning (for tip burnishing and cleaning). Personally, I wouldn't mount it with direct drive, but it works.

I had the bracket fabricated to mount the motor and align with the tip end/rollers of the gizmo. It runs at approximately 1250 to 1750 rpms and suited my needs for personal use on tips and shaft cleaning. I didn't intend the gizmo to withstand the demands of commercial machines.

I no longer need it and anyone can have it for $75 plus $10 shipping. Everything comes with it except the board. It would cost too much to ship. I bought the 3 foot shelve board at Home Depot for $3.95.
PM if interested.

Rip
