Do I have a problem?

I have a Brunswick 4X8 table that I believe is a Manchester. A friend of mine bought the table new in 1988. I bought the table from a local billiards supply shop 2 years ago after he traded it in ( I was about 6 months away from being finished with my gameroom at he time). I think the table plays slow. I am ready to recover the table wish Simonis 760 but am concerned with the cushions. I don't know if the rails are dead or not. It currently has (I believe a Forstman cloth). If I make a hard hit from the headstring it comes back 3 rails to the head string. I know it should rebound 4 rails and to mid table or so. The cushions are soft to the press and do not seem hard at all. The table is perfectly level and the balls have just a bit of felt wobbel at the end of a very slow roll. I just don't know if I need new rubber. I have recovered a few tables and feel confident doing so but I would have to turn the rubber replacement over to the pros and it would be quite expensive around here. The current coushins are 1 and 15/32 from the slate. Are the rails too high?

I never would have noticed too much but I play in an APA league once a week and the home bar just got new Diamond bar boxes and the they seem soo fast and the coushins seem to rebound so much more than my home table that I am having a hard time adjusting. I think alot of may be the cue ball as well.

Any thoughts,

Brad

Brad, I worked on one of these tables the other day and it did play slow also, we were also a little under for 4 rails. We put on simonis and got him a new set of aramith balls and it played a little faster. Not all tables are going to play the same. Generally, Brunswick rubber is good and last a long time. Rubber can become too soft. When you hit the ball into the first cushion it should respond with equal speed or a little faster. I wouldn't recommend putting 760 on a 8 foot table, stick with 860. Live with the fact that Brunswick home tables play different from Dimaond bar tables. I also play bar league and compete in 9-foot tournaments, At the end of the day I believe the diversity of playing on different size tables, cloth condition, table speeds, pocket openings makes me a better player.

Naaa...I believe the "Slowness" of your table is due to the Forstman cloth, it's more like carpeting as opposed to the worsted wool 860 Simonis Tour blue used on the Diamond tables...and even that 860 plays faster than the normal 860 green...I don't think its in the cushions...not if they haven't started loosing their profile by turning to mush first...then rock hard.

Glen

PS. Change the cloth first, get on the same sheet of music first, then make a judgement call after. Your cushions are at the right height, just make sure the rail bolts are tight as well.
