Do not open email attachments from me

There's something a little odd going on with my raffle email address. Twice I've gotten the following notice...

One or more of the attachments (DSC-00465.pIf) are on
the list of unacceptable attachments for this site and will not have
been delivered.

Consider renaming the files or putting them into a "zip" file to avoid
this constraint.

The virus detector said this about the message:
Report: Shortcuts to MS-Dos programs are very dangerous in email (DSC-00465.pIf)
No programs allowed (DSC-00465.pIf)

I had not sent an email at all, let alone an attachment to the email address. I'm not quite sure what's going on but if you get an email with an attachment from "me", please do not open it. Donovan, I sent you an email last night @ 10:42 pm EDT with some pics in a zip file.

If I need to send someone an attachment, I'll do it from another email address that has my name in it so you'll know it's from me.

that means that it could cause your computer to crash or ruin your c drive in the harddrive :)

As a safety precaution, you might want to back up your hard drive if you haven't already. Make sure you don't have any passwords stored, either. I know someone who saw her bank records come up on her screen and she was in the next room.
 
Chances are that it's someone ELSE'S machine that's sending those notes - someone who has YOUR email in their address book. It's a fairly common email virus method - to fire off infected emails to all the addresses found on the infected machine, and to fake their origin as OTHER addresses on that same machine. This just makes it horribly difficult to trace who's machine is the culprit, as how many folks have your email address in their address book? No telling.

But as your email address is likely the faked 'from' address, you're the one who's getting the bounce/error messages, hence how you found out about this to begin with.

It couldn't hurt to run some anti-virus bits on your machine, just to be safe.

I've gotten 3 emails saying that I've tried to send an infected file. Even though I have an antivirus, I only download files that I'm familiar with like jpegs to try and ensure I don't download a virus. I did a search on my computer for the files that the emails say I'm trying to send and they're not located on my computer. I also ran a norton quick scan which came up clean. I started a thorough scan last night before bed and it was still going when I left for work today.

The only people that I use that email with are folks from on here pertaining to the raffle. Donovan is the only one I send files to and those are simple jpegs of items to post on the web page. Luckily this isn't happening with my main email account.

Just to be safe.... if for some reason I need to send anyone here a file, I will not be sending it from the raffle email. Those of you that have emailed me, check your computer. I believe the issues have to do with someone's computer on here... all 3 of the kick backs that have warned me of this are coming from azb... Mike's system is scanning it and kicking it back. Until I forwarded these to Mike, I had never sent him an email from that account to the best of my knowledge.

How many folks is that, best guess?

You might consider sending out an email to the folks who you've sent emails to via that address in the past - basically a "I urge you to check your system for viruses" sort of note. Who knows, you might connect with the poor sod whose system is compromised, and he/she may end up doing something about it. It certainly couldn't hurt.

Also - do the emails you're getting back have the original email inside? I'm wondering if you can extract the headers from the original infected email and post'em here. That might help as far as tracking down where they're coming from, and maybe whose machine they're originating from.

Id also advise, just for your piece of mind, to do a free virus scan from this site http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner


Like ScottW said without looking at the header info from the email the return address means nothing.
 
I have no doubt that Scott is right. ;) I don't have an address book set up for this account but I do know that this account has been limited to raffle stuff only so the only people I have had email contact with are all azb members....

Any of you that have emailed me or me you.... please check your system. This is happening from within this community somewhere. I'll let you guys know how the full scan finished on my computer when I get home. It's a full Norton scan but I'll try the link that pbat gave to scan also as a back up.
