I like to rough up my tip fairly regularly as well. I think it helps to hold the chalk and prevent miscues. I have recently converted to the UltraSkin layered tip in the medium hardness and really like this tip. I plan to put an UltraSkin soft on another shaft to compare and decide if I like the soft tip better. As with most thing I think it is personal preference.
