Do the Pro's have any annual competitions in Phoenix, AZ?

I am curious how often you might see the pro's visit any of the pool halls in Phoenix, or if they have any big annual tournaments in the Phoenix area?

Just curious.

Thanks for any info, or thoughts.

Not since the days of the Golden 8-ball when Danny D. was the house pro and played many a big name in the pit. There used to be an event that was held at the Convention Center (downtown). The last "pro" event of any signifigance was at Kolby's Corner Pocket. Many of the big names all over the world came in for that event. Other than that it has been pretty much a scattering of pros that come through and either tried to hustle or played Scott Frost One pocket. Efren came through for a big 1-pocket match. Cory came through in his early days and played the polite little geek that didn't know what he was doing role and hustled a couple players at Casino Billiards back in the day. He later came back from time to time pretty much just to visit and stayed at Ed Scott's house...(RIP Ed).....Now you hear some names coming through from time to time but nothing major.

Any more the only pros in town are the Fargo Pros........There is only about 3 (maybe 4) players that can actually compete against pros in town and about 10-20 that "think" they can.....I am not one of them....I am practicing at not practicing so I can someday become a Fargo Pro :p

I recently bought Ed’s Diamond from his widow. My wife found it for sale. I would love to know more about him. His wife was a delight, son not so much. I know he was a local player but that is all I know. Pretty cool that Cory probably played on the table!

Here is the thread of the table acquisition

He was one of the good ones....I played on a BCA team with him years ago, actually drove up and roomed with him that year. He was a Math Wizard. He taught math gymnastics or something like that to kids. He was the human "blue book" of cues and had a few of them. IIRC he played in Camel Tour Events years ago but not sure if he ever made it very far. Due to the proximity I did not get over to his house very often...but I played on that table at his house. IIRC he said something along the lines that Cory was the only one to ever run 100 on it so although I was never there when Cory was there, I am fairly certain that Cory has hit a few balls on it.

He actually posted a couple videos of his "variation" of Shane's stick aiming method. He loved to talk pool, methods, systems etc.....One day years ago I showed him the banking method I use (I learned it from Dr Cue I don't remember when) that I call the mini mirror system....basically the mirror system done within the confines of the table instead of extending out into space...Think it may be called the X system....He was so thrilled with the system that he set out to mathamatically prove the system and did a whole paper on it.

Bums me out that he passed...He was one I used to look forward to seeing at an evernt and hang out with to pass time between matches....Anymore I don't really go play anymore since the names have all changed....most of the younger players I don't even know and since I am not the most outgoing person.....hanging out by yourself for loing periods of time between matches gets rather boring and I usually end up just sleeping in my truck between matches....and admittidly I have lost any kind of extended focus or heart to fight back in a match....so instead I just go play poker.

Here is his posted videos of his aiming method. He did an initial and follow up video.

Hi, are you a local? I wonder about the tournament (non league) scene in Phoenix. Do you happen to know of any weekly tournaments, that regularly get good turn outs? I wonder where Scott Frost plays at these days. House Pro anywhere? Thanks for your reply.

Frost got a sweet gig with MR doing commentary on their events. AFAIK he is no longer a house pro anywhere. He said on a stream he still does lessons in Phoenix.

That is cool. Thanks. Curious, do you know what that location is called that used to be Freezers? Is that still a pool hall? I undersrand that the name changed, but I can't remember what the new name of the place was called. Thanks.

Mostly Fargo Pro events.....JJ's, Metro, BullShooters, Main Street, Dozers, are the main locations to check for weekly......Chip tournaments are now the norm and the higher your Fargo you pretty much have to play perfect and string 10-15 wins at least once to lap the field and catch up.....It can be done but very difficult.....the more players in the field...the harder it is for a higher rated player that gets less chips.

Most of the tournaments are sub 600 as that is what gets the most players.......You don't have to practice (or play all the time) to be a sub 600. That is the majority of players so as a room/business owner....that is what they are going to cater to the most.

The days of regular weekly $10-20 open events are long gone.

Hi, thanks for the info. Off topic, but can you tell me how rough of an area that is around Metro Sports bar? Is there an abandoned mall right there, near by?

I wouid be riding public transit, so hopefully it is not too dangerous over there in the evening.

And, yeah, I am a 535 Fargo, lol, which feels pretty weak. Hope I can get up to at least 600 someday. I am not even Established yet though. I have like 192 games in the system. I can't even call myself a pool player, lol. I miss the game a lot though.

Thanks.

The area around Metro is being redeveloped.

Metro use to have great tournaments years ago, before Fargo.🤯🤮

Think Metro is still going tournaments nightly if you are in Fargo system.

Example of a chip tournament.....FYI...incoming player breaks....race to 1......if you lose you lose a chip......Very much a "social" event.....A 720 can only lose 2 games the whole tournament.....and has to play probably more than 30 games.....NOTE: The faster you run out....the quicker you get to the next game...all it takes is one quick combo or even a break and run (9-ball) from the incoming player to lose a game. Very much a tournament that favors the lower rated player, becuase if you lose a chip you get back in line and sit until all other players have played.....It also favors players that take multiple innings per game.....or drag thier feet between shots...run to the bathroom etc etc....TDs do what they can to not let that happen...but only so much they can really do....creative "saftey misses" are very much a part of the gaming the system.

Hi, curious to hear the story. Love stories. Thanks.

Well if you go to archives, and search Chuck Bobbit, you will get the info. Was over 10 years ago, and a \sc I said Jay H., was TD.

Forget the name of the event, but it was 25K add, then because fiasco.

here is place to get some of details.

That was the event I mentioned (post #2) that ended up being held at Kolby's. (IIRC I think it was supposed to be at a Hotel but the hotel it was supposed to be held at became unavailable and Kolby stepped up) Big Fiasco....Chuck got himself in all kinds of a bad situation...........Never crossed paths with Chuck again after that event......Never found out if it got resolved or anything.........That was back when I played on the last Alexanders team to win AZBCA .......Alexanders then closed....started playing at a different room......Got jerked around by my own teamates that I thought were my freinds....turned out I was just a pawn in thier Vegas plans.......quit league and started playing more poker.....petty much fell out of the AZ pool scene........Found out that one of those so called "friends" took over the league and at the end of the season all the league money was "stolen".....I don't know the details other than the "cash" (not in a bank) was stolen from his house. Never heard of the outcome details and have not seen him at any of my cameo tournament appearances.
