Do you drink alcohol while you play? I don't mean while you practice, I'm talking about competition, whether that be a tournament, gambling, or any time you're playing a competent opponent outside of a social situation. If you like, please also make clear where you do most of your playing, be it a pool room, a bar, or at home.

I do not drink at all, but, I used to play a top player alcohol addict at a pool hall, he used to beat me when he is at his sixth bottles of bear, after that i take control and get even with him and i quit because he is wasted, cannot say full sentence.

I have took a shot of whiskey a time or two in order to come out of the gates relaxed. It takes the edge off. I only do it in big sessions or if I feel a big nervous before. Sometimes I don't feel a bit of nervous energy. I have some anxiety problems so if I feel that anxiety creeping on me before the start of a big gambling match I might take a shot of whiskey or drink two beers if they are available.

Overall though, I wouldn't recommend drinking and playing. It will eventually bite you.

That's a silly thread

Why would anyone not drink while playing?? It's a well known fact that:

Pool is social, so is drinking.
Average people, become better people after drinking.
Hand eye coordination, and reflexes improve with alcohol consumption
Excuses are harder to come by when you're not drinking

And the number one fact............
"the only reason why you're beating me is because you're sober."
:grin-square:

I took up pool after I gave up the booze.I am addicted to coffe and to pool so the 2 addictions go together.

I play in a place that is a good mix of pool hall and bar,the best of both worlds so to speak. Some might say it is the worst of each world.

“On the whole, observe the same rule about gin martinis – and all gin drinks – that you would in judging female breasts: one is far too few, and three is one too many. Do try to eat the olives: they can be nutritious.” (Christopher Hitchens writing in Vanity Fair, 2003)

...I find that a couple of drinks seems to reduce my warm-up time to about three games. Without drinking it can take me an hour or more to really get into my stroke.

Used to

I used to! But not during league I don't drink previous to my game but after it starts I will have a max or 2 beers. And I do not play better after that.

But, if we are just doing play play I will drink wine or Diet Coke and Vanilla Vodka! Otherwise its a ton of seltzer water with lime.

I voted "never" but I did have one beer during a game a few weeks ago. There was simply nothing else in the fridge (we play in a private establishment), and I hate Cola with passion. During my one sole beer, my opponent drank 6 beers, but he already had 5 before I arrived, so 11 in total! 11 empty beer bottles in what, maybe 3 hours or so and he still didn't show any signs of being intoxicated.

This is me exactly.

I quit drinking when I had my first child. I never wanted to come home drunk and drop her or get arrested for DUI so I just quit. Never looked back.

The real question is how can you play without drinking? lol

same here. I don't want to be hammered, but 2 beers and maybe one shot (depending on how long before I ate) has to go down for me to shoot well.

this is at home or in league at a pool hall.

I would if I could, but I can't..... I can't even drink one beer or my game falls off at least 25%..... so, i have to wait till league is over before I order my beer.

I wish I could play, but it affects the intensity..... when I'm drinking I just don't care if I win or lose, and that is even after one beer :)

I take Welbutrin it's an anxiety RX it helps me a lot! Still I get anxious but after 1 or 2 beers I'm good.

If I have a big match that evening I'll start the day with a couple of Bloody Mary's or an orange juice and vodka. Just the usual six-pack with lunch and afternoon refreshments. A couple of martinis on the way to the pool hall.

If I feel like the alcohol is slowing me down I'll do a couple of lines right before the match. Everything in balance.

Just kidding. I don't drink or do coke. But I just saw the movie "Flight" so it's all top-of-mind.

I'm not a big drinker although I do drink occasionally. I play at home, in bars, & at a pool hall on league night.
