Do You Remember This Guy?

OldHasBeen

Tom Ferry
Keith - There is a fellow living in Poplar Bluff, MO named CHUCK ABSHER who is always referring to being able to beat you way back when in CA. He is about 6'2' and has silver hair & about 60 yrs old. This guy is a "ShortStop" at best and even that is a strech. You & I played here in St. Louis when you were 16 yrs old or so and I can't imigine this guy ever even coming close to beating you, much less teaching you the finer points of the game as he claims. Normally I wouldn't let someone or something like this to "Get Under My Skin" but THIS IS ALL THIS GUY TALKS ABOUT! Let me know & Thanks, Tom

Chuck and I used play in the local tournaments in Oceanside and San Diego. He would sneak up on you, if you didn't know him. I remember him beating Swanee a couple of times, and a few of the other decent players as well. He wasn't really a money player, but once in a while, he could show up. :)

Tom, how have you been? If I remember right, you and I used to play pretty close. Do you still shoot anymore? How's the action in St. Louis? If you see Dean Deforest, tell him I said hi.

Dizzy Dean was posting at billiardsdigest.com a while back. It's probably been a couple years since I have been to that site though, so I have no idea if he's still posting there.

Haven't seen Dean In Over a Year.

Yes, We were pretty close when I was handing you my cash. Seriously, other than some ring games at tourneys - we only played once at Affton Billiards. You were VERY young. Maybe 16 or so. I only lost $60 or $80 to you and everyone was ribbing me because I quit a "Kid". The next day when you returned - You busted all the other players. I however, had at least 2 rail bets on you through other people. If I would have bet myself, it would have put too much heat on you even though we didn't know each other. It was only about 2 or 3 weeks earlier that Hippy Jimmy & Barbara came through so I figured you were just following them. What impressed me the most was that even at that young age - You were only playing as good as you had to - to get the cash! You beat a fellow named Gordon Guy (originally Gracie, from D.C.) & a good local named Neal Schenk.
Glad to hear this Chuck Absher isn't ALL B.S. - He is still VERY aggravating though because he does all this talking but wouldn't "Bet Fat Meat Is Greasy".
Yes, there is some pretty good action coming back to St. Louis lately. Action is tough though anywhere there is Casinos/Boats that get all the cheese. Terry at The Break will always give someone a FAIR game and wager many $K's. There is a fellow near here who playes himself and puts a few players "In The Box" for many $K's. There is a good black poolroom (Very nice, well run and safe) with quite a few good 1 hole players who will bet it up if they like it. I think Cliff is hanging around there right now. Now if someone comes into The Break in the afternoon when I'm there and they have a "Bucket of Coal" - I'll see to it they leave with a "Bucket Of Ashes" at the very least.
Later, & May All "The Rolls" Be With You, Tom
