Do you think that most pool players are nice and cool with good attitudes, or not?

Golf is a one person sport but doesn't have anywhere near as much attitude.
There's more to the equation than that with Pool Players.

Golf also has a governing body with teeth and in order to get to play in the top level events you have to go through training and earn you pro card. Part of that training is public personna as representing the sport.

You have to have training in order to be a Sportsman and a Gentleman?
And.... it's required?
Where do they do the training? Golf University?

You're right you should not have to be trained to be a sportsman and a gentleman, in fact your parents should have taken care of most of that by the time you were 13 or so. As for golf and the governing body, it's the PGA and here is an example of where you get the training and what is trained.

I know a little bit about golf...started working at a pro shop when I was twelve...
...won a few things as a teenager.

Golf is not a good comparison to billiards...in golf, you play the course, even in match play...
...you can't affect other golfers....at least within the rules.

In billiards, you have to handle the table AND your opponent...
...so it is more akin to boxing or chess.
If your opponent doesn't influence how you play...then you've got a lot to learn...
...a good competitor exploits an opponent's weaknesses and guards against their strength.

So when you talk to a good player, even though the game he plays is a bit sedentary....
....you're talking to a fighter.
You want Mother Teresa.....won't find her at a pool hall.

pt...sometimes greets old acquaintances with "Whaddiya wanna do?"

There are just as many dregs, percentage wise, in a pool hall as anywhere else in the world. The place I feel there are higher numbers of people who are just not good or nice in any way would be a sector like banking or something. I honestly believe a crack addict looks like the Virgin Mary compared to those types who base their lives in lying and deception and who gets raises, promotions and more success and admiration the more they **** people over. Look at Bernie madoff before he was caught, you could not find a more liked and respected person anywhere.

Why do you put professional pool players up on some sort of pedestal?

To me, they are nothing more than regular Joes who just happen to play pool at a very high level.

Some Joes are assholes and other Joes aren't. It is as simple as that. It isn't something that is unique only to pool.

I have no problem walking up to or talking to anybody and I don't care what they do for a living. They are just people to me.

Quit thinking of people as some sort of "heroes" or something because they can do ONE thing better than somebody else. Can they do anything else, that makes some sort of significance in the world, better than other people?

Justin you really need to read this over and over. Obviously you are a big fan of people who can runout. Quit treating them any differently than you would anyone else. In my experience, when you do that, they will treat YOU like a regular joe too,but if you give them the " awe man,its so great to meet you.... Treatment," it gives them,the...holes anyway, the opportunity to treat you like you are inferior to them. Just treat people the way you want to be treated and it will serve you well bud.

Pool league and tournament players generally positive. I mean you will always have the occasional jerk lol but 99% are cool. They play the game because they love it.

Gamblers. .. generally assholes. Not all but most. They play the game for the hustle and the gamble and to me seem to have very little respect or love for the game it self.

I've met a lot of assholes sure enough. Either you are gambling or they don't want anything to do with you and no conversation either.

A few play the nice hustle. They understand the soft sell, those on occasion I will play cheap but that's it. It's usually when I need to figure out a new angle on my One Pocket Game to take it up a notch. In that way the losses amount to lessons and I tend to get what I came for and not be a regular donator. They understand it, I understand it and we all get what were there for. These guys love the game, but they do this for a living and they are there for the prospects of making money.

I've given this quite a bit of thought over the years. It is true that some pool players could improve their attitude by reading Dale Carnegie's book, How to win friends and influence people.

That being said, pool players (those who depend upon their pool earnings for a living) have a rough life financially and this puts a strain on their interaction skills.

In addition to the financial pressure of trying to survive, you have to understand that some of these pool players are CONSTANTLY & PERSISTENTLY being contacted in person via e-mail and social media and that alone can drive a person into reclusion. The fact that most fans mean no harm; I have to imagine that at certain times this constant bombardment must be very irritating.

And let's not even discuss the haters who are always trying to get into their heads or the people who are trying to get them in a game that they can't win or those who are trying to develop a scam with them to dump another unknowing soul.

My final conclusion is YES, most pool players could improve on the way that they interact with their fans, but the fans must understand that the pool players have a lot on their plate as far as finances and pressure is concerned and a little space and courtesy should be given on both sides of the respective fences.

Justin, just a couple of thoughts here if you'll allow me.

You seem to be a nice, thoughtful and sensitive young man. At least I'm assuming you're young, because you seem to lack the cynicism that normally comes with age and time. And I don't think you've developed a realistic set of observations about human nature. Maybe that's a good thing; you're probably more pleasant to be around than many of us grizzled old life veterans.

But the truth is, your suspicions are largely correct. You're not likely to encounter many Eagle Scouts hanging around in pool rooms. It's just the nature of the universe I'm afraid. And many times, you'll find that some of these folks will recognize your relative naiveté and try to take advantage of it. Not much you can do about it.

Your best bet is to acknowledge these guys politely but don't go out of your way to engage them. They've trained themselves to sense fear and one way or another they'll likely eat you alive. Enjoy your chosen sport and be nice when spoken to, but don't go out of your way to get involved with these folks. If you just observe, you can tell which ones they are.

Good luck with all this!
