Does 9-ball today need a fix?

It's a minority view, but it's how I feel: Require the 9 to be the LAST ball pocketed, if made on the break - spot it and keep shooting or re-rack. It would dramatically reduce the luck factor. Also, let's eliminate the 3-foul rule because all it does is slow down the bracket, create new enemies, fuel arguments, and allow the experienced player to duck forever. Just have a stalemate rule instead.

Making the 9 on the break...with properly racked balls is about 35-1 in pro pool. If it happens more often than that in amateur play, it would only because of racking errors...rigging.

I AGREE that the 9 should be spotted but it wouldn't significantly reduce the luck factor...but it should be done anyway.

Calling shots would have a far more significant impact on luck.

But the most significant flaw in today's 9 Ball rules is the high percentage of wing balls that go when we play with tight/tapped racks.

That flaw would be EASILY remedied.

The only thing I do not like about 9 ball is the luck factor. Remove the slop rule, and call the 9.

I simply do not understand the push for 10 ball. 9 ball is a hard enough game. Look at the stats for run outs and balls made on break. They are not as high as many people think. Remove some of the luck factor currently in the 9 ball game and there is no need for change!!
