Due to nerve damage via a broken neck(car wreck) i don't like bigger butts. 1.20-1.24" are my favorites now. I played with an old-school big-butt cue the other day and it felt like a baseball bat in my hand.I see lots of cues for sale, and virtually no one lists the thickness of the butt. Is it unimportant to you? Do the pros care, or do they use whatever cue is given to them?

Pretty skinny. 30mm is 1.18" for the non-metric crowd.I'm not sure on the width of the butt of my cue, either, but I doubt it's anywhere near the 30s. I'd say it's about 28mm–29mm.
Here's an image of it compared to a block of chalk.
I don't think I've ever used anything wider than 28/29 for a playing cue, either in pool or snooker. Although, my break cue looks around the 30mm mark.Pretty skinny. 30mm is 1.18" for the non-metric crowd.
Many better players just cradle the under side of the cue butt loosely in their fingers, so grip size is not that big of a factor. A bigger factor is whether they prefer the feel of linen, leather, or no wrap in their fingers.I see lots of cues for sale, and virtually no one lists the thickness of the butt. My hands are massive, so I need more to grip.
Someone with small hands like Chris Robinson might want thin grips.
LOTs of people grip the cue at the end.I was about to do the poll, then I noticed...The diameter where you grip will of course be narrower from the butt diameter at the end. I believe the OP is talking butt diameter. However, the title on the poll seems to specify "grip" location, and almost no one grips at the end of the butt. If the OP would clarify, that would help.
I was one of them before realizing you can get cues in longer lengths. Like pants or golf clubs.LOTs of people grip the cue at the end.
To me long cues have always felt weird. Balance always feels strange.I was one of them before realizing you can get cues in longer lengths. Like pants or golf clubs.
