I see lots of cues for sale, and virtually no one lists the thickness of the butt. Is it unimportant to you? Do the pros care, or do they use whatever cue is given to them?

It is important. But normally they are pretty standard. I remember when i was young i played thicccc butt Falcon and liked it. It felt odd after i picked up that butt years later though. Too thin is no go for me. Russian Pyramid cues have mostly thin butts and I don´t like them coz of that.

Due to nerve damage via a broken neck(car wreck) i don't like bigger butts. 1.20-1.24" are my favorites now. I played with an old-school big-butt cue the other day and it felt like a baseball bat in my hand.

Same here, I grew up playing with an old McDermott and it has a big butt, but nowadays I don’t care for it at all. My tip on my Runde was needing replacement so I went back to the old McD for awhile and could never adjust. The old tip is very old and it still draws well, but the fat butt is foreign to me now.

I was waiting for the sir-mix-alot reference. Been following the thread to see how long it took ;)

I will notice the difference if it is really thick or thin, but it has never factored into my liking or disliking a cue. Balance is key for me. I like a front balanced cue.

My hands are massive, so I need more to grip.

Someone with small hands like Chris Robinson might want thin grips.

Many better players just cradle the under side of the cue butt loosely in their fingers, so grip size is not that big of a factor. A bigger factor is whether they prefer the feel of linen, leather, or no wrap in their fingers.

And I have average hands so most sticks work just fine but if I pick up a fat bottomed cue (I left that one for someone else) I can instantly tell it's not going to work but if I grab a thinner cue I generally like the feel of it.

I was about to do the poll, then I noticed...The diameter where you grip will of course be narrower from the butt diameter at the end. I believe the OP is talking butt diameter. However, the title on the poll seems to specify "grip" location, and almost no one grips at the end of the butt. If the OP would clarify, that would help.

LOTs of people grip the cue at the end.
