Does HIT really matter?

Hi,

I'm playing with a cue I really like, I'm comfortable with the cue. The balance and the taper feel good. I get good action off the cue. It's a Southwest. The only thing is, the cue hits a little softer than I like. I like that loud/hard ping sound, where when the ball hits the back of the pocket you can really hear it. I know I could change the tips, but I have Kamui Black Mediums on already, they are hard enough. I tried removing the bumper, but then the cue hits almost too hard. Any suggestions on what I could do to get it to hit harder?

Also I started thinking... does it really matter? I just like hearing that loud crisp sound, its almost like instant gratification after I pounded a ball in. So what if it hits softer than I like, does it really matter in the end?

I can't see why you would want to fix something that is not broke.
The loud crisp sound is not really that important.
The ability to control the cue ball is paramount.
If you are happy with your cue ball control , can make shots it is fine.
You have explored the obvious changes and have decided that the current tip is what you want.

Your reasons may be a little suspect, but if it matters to you then it matters period!!!!!!!! There is no reasons in todays world that you can't find the hit that you want. My recommendation to you would be to go to a show, like the Super Billiards Expo and find the cue you are looking for. Good luck in your search.

I have installed plenty of kamui's. Im my opinion the SS and medium are close in hit. You will never get that hit your looking for with that tip. I would recommend a wizard medium, Tiger Sniper, or even a Triangle. You have to explore more options with tips. Then if necessary if all fails look into what ferrule you have.

I hate to be the one to point out the obvious here. But "that loud/hard ping sound, where when the ball hits the back of the pocket you can really hear it." has nothing to do with the cue. The sound a ball makes when hitting the back of the pocket is not the cue's doing. That is only how hard you hit the cue ball.

But the loud pingy sound a cue makes the instant it hits the cue ball does have something to do with the cues construction. A harder tip and/or a harder ferrule would be a couple of reasonable options to make your SW make more noise without devaluing it. Since removing the bumper made it too noisy and putting it back in makes it not noisy enough, try having some bumpers made out of wood or phenolic and see if that gives you the sound you want. A stainless joint and Ivory ferrule cue with hard tip is probably what you are looking for.

Now to try and answer your question. Yes, hit matters. But the hollow pingy sounding hit you might be wanting usually takes away from cue ball action and deflects more. And although you may like the sound, it is an inferior hit for me. It may be a superior hit for others, but not for me.

What about S and M? I have been trying out different blacks and find the difference quite noticeable. I haven't tried the SS, as I really like the S....

In fact, I ran out of M's at one point and put a S on for a friend without telling him. It took him about ten mins, but he asked if I put a S on instead.

I agree completely with the tip and ferrule part. Absolutely nothing changes the hit more than a different tip....then ferrule.

Like this gent above said. Start with tips....then maybe different ferrule. They are both cheaper and easier to get than another SW..

Like Chris said; Stainless joint, Ivory ferrule, and my two cents any layer med tip on a shaft with lots of growth rings. Sounds like a new cue.
