Friend own (2) Pool Bar in Phoenix, and a RAIL POOL Room in Flagstaff, he decided to institute a $3.00 COVER CHARGE for Rail Birds to help his CASH FLOW.

As it seemed he was getting one Paying Player, and 3 or more FRIENDS who came along to watch.

The $3.00 Cover Charge was EXCHANGE for a VOUCHER good for 30 Days, on anything in his room, Table Time, Cues, Accessories, Food, or Drink.

He said the THREE Dollar Cover Charge was CHARGE on a THIRD Friends along for the ride, or any RAIL Birds.

Seemed to help his cash flow, and did not stop most of the Rail Birds from coming down to watch.

I think its a good idea-Even better to keep out all the mooches on Fri night and the guys drinking "ice water please" and then dont even tip.

The Fuscos used to charge $5 admission on weekends at their Feasterville, Pa place for just that. I believe the credit was only good that night which is ok by me too.

The funniest thing was the sign right next to the door guy; it said something like. "Dont ask to see Petey (Fusco) about the $5 charge. Petey says you gotta pay too." :)

Believe it or not it is against the LAW in Arizona to refused WATER to a person.

uhmm that link doesn't really support what you are saying. Not that i could see anyway.

I have hear as long as I have live in AZ it is Against the LAW to REFUSE ANYONE WATER? Could never find the ARS Section but I know it there.

yeah....I always figured regarding rail birds. They weren't going to play anyways so there really wasn't any lost revenue. As far as the water thing goes.....water is supposed to be free. It's like that in every restaurant, so why should you be any different.

If you go to a bowling alley, do you pay if you don't bowl? NO.

so there.

I have never gone into ANY business and asked for a drink of water on them, at least not since i was 6 y.o. I dont ask for change either, i buy something that i will eventually use. And if you thought you saw a lot of pool rooms closing in the past year, just wait. It's twice as bad out there now easily.

MY apologies for posting in here. I didnt realize it was the room owner area. I am not.

I do not charge rail birds anything, people are like magnets, it is a proved fact they simple attract other people.

However, I do have standards, no bum's, no homeless, and no thugs, and these standards are enforced. If some one who fits into one of these categories enters my business uninvited, they are politely ask what can be done to help them. If they do not buy anything, or want to rent a table, they are politely asked to leave.

Taking care of this kind of problem and not allowing them to bother my customers keeps the environment in my establishment user, league, and family friendly. In addition to well maintained equipment, and a clean safe environment in my room, I offer much more than just beer and tables for hourly rent. The combination of all the above and equipment sales along with Professional Cue repair gives me the diversification to stay competitive, and it keeps my customers coming back.

I suppose though for some this may be an ideal way to make extra income, however, there certainly are a number of ways to achieve the same goal.

We always charge a minimum of half the group when they come in. Too many times you have 7 kids come in and only 2 want to play. A large % of the time, when people get out of hand because they are bored...its the 5 who wanted to loiter. Railbirds who are regulars are welcome but paying customers get first priority in terms of who sits in the chairs by their tables or TV Volume..stuff like that. Its always a balance of bad and worse when it comes to deciding who stays and who goes. Never a perfect solution to that problem.

Talked with an old time Arizona Cop yesterday, the "WATER LAW" is an URBAN LEGEND that has been asked about for YEARS in Arizona.
