Dominant eye being opposite of shooting arm?

My eye doctor tells me that my left eye is my dominant eye. I shoot with my right hand. In many pool books readers are instructed to place their dominant eye over the cue. For anyone who shares this physical mismatch does it present a problem with balance or awkwardness over a shot.

Cross dominance is common. I'm the same way, and I shoot with the cue centered between my eyes and it works great. If you look at a lot of pros, they center the cue between their eyes. Don't believe everything you read!

I've played with both my right eye and my left eye as my dominant eye at different times. Whichever it is, I prefer to place the cue below the eye I'm aiming with, this allows me to see the ball better. At first it's awkward but then you start playing more and you get the feel of every single kind of shot and then it's okay. I'm actually sharper with my left than with my right, and my eye doc says I'm right eye dominant.

I think I read somewhere that Earl Strickland is opposite eye dominant. He sure seems to do ok.

well,,,he's right handed and he lines up the cue on the right side of his face. so if he's, as you're saying, left eye dominant, he's not using his left eye to shoot.

I'm a little skeptical about the topic of eye dominance. I have a large blind spot in the center of my left eye, to the point where I can't read letters or identify people with just that eye. You'd think that would make me dramatically right-eye dominant. However, when I put my chin directly over the cuestick, that's when straight-in shots look right to me. Seems unusual to me, but there you have it... :)

personally i don't believe having your dominant eye over the cue makes a difference, Earl and Niels hold their heads far off of the cue and are incredible shot makers. But like Ralph and Kim Shaw shoot right handed and are left eye dominant they hold the cue under their dominant eye, i shoot left handed and am right eye dominant so i tried to shoot with my right over the cue and it is very uncomfortable for me.

Background of my eyesight: [stated in previous posts, easy to verify with search function]

Left eye - 20/15
Right eye - 20/100 + minocular diploplia (1 eye sees double)

Over the years I've learned to adjust. I purposefully put myself in akward positions to work on overcoming this disfunction.

An example: I patched my dominate left eye and forced myself to shot for two hours straight. All the while having my mind figure out how to shoot at two cue balls, two sets of object balls, on two tables... all the while knowing it is only one.

One of the ways to work on two problems at the same time is to use a bridge/crutch/"sissy stick" for a full hour [including the break]. You'll learn better stance, better sight alignment, and better speed control doing so. All the while having your mind (problem 1) make sense of your sight (problem 2).

Now my mind (with my eye sight) has three points of reference to make a shot accurately. My only problem is adjusting to the speed of table (initially).

You're in very good company. Mosconi, Sigel, and Rempe, just to name a few off the top of my head, are cross dominant shooters.

I play Pool left Handed, and am Right Eye Dominant. I try and keep my Right Eye over the Stick at ALL TIMES.

Shots being cut, or going right are easier for me than Shots being cut or going Left.

I cock my head a little left when shooting to my Left, and if I concentrate it works. Just another thing to remember when setting up for a Pool Shot.

Shoot Rifles, and Shotguns Right Handed. Shot a Pistol Left Handed, but almost as well Right Handed.

Write, and everything else I am a South Paw.

No matter where your dominant eye is, you can learn how to aim and get used to it. That's why Earl and Neils are such great shotmakers. They are used to aiming with the cue off to the right. If they put the cue underneath their chins they would probably have alot of trouble.

eye dominance

I'm blind in my right eye so it doen't affect me since I have adapted, but firing shotguns with the cross dominance can be a bit more frighteneing.:)

THEY DO NOT AIM WITH THE CUE OFF TO THE RIGHT. AIMING IS NEVER DONE WITH THE CUE. AIMING IS DONE BY AIMING THE CUE BALL AT THE OBJECT BALL. THAT IS WHAT THEY DO.

I am opposite eye dominate like Earl and Niels. I never knew until I took lessons. My game improved almost immediately.

AIMING CUE BALL TO OBJECT BALL POCKETS BALLS. CUE STICKS NEVER AIM OR POCKET BALLS.

IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT PLAYERS YOU QUOTE; THEY ALL PLAY BY AIMING THE CUE BALL AT THE OBJECT BALL. CUE STICKS NEVER AIM ANY SHOT.
