Yes, it is. Useful systems get you to the right diamond or so and then it is up to your feel.
Yeah, I think system play is the age old conflict with Billiard players. I have always played by feel. When I practice, I try to play fairly quickly, and attempt to memorize how things play out. It annoys the heck out of me when playing with someone who has not played much, and takes SOOO long in between shots to only miss the damn spot they were looking to hit by a few diamonds...look at the shot, take it, then learn from it. Repeat many times...
NOTE: I did "use" the corner 5 system long ago, but have since basically got the feel of what kind of hit and english will put me where. I've also learned extremes from various positions. Then adjusted from there. Finally, if it's a bank shot, I do sometimes calculate using corner 5, but it's rare that I don't adjust a bit based on feel. Yes, sometimes I'm right, sometimes I'm way wrong...

Lately what's working good for me is looking at where my cue ball is going after contact first
, then applying however much English I feel is needed
I've been practicing the short shots alot
All 3 balls on one side of the table, go off 1 hit the corner come back and make the other
Short Zig zag shots I'm getting better at judging
I can hit rail first shots pretty good if the other 2 are along the long rail and close to the corner
Just last night I was hoping up and down on a few neat shots when you "kill" the English
Add the smallest amount of reverse English so when it hits the rail goes natural
What fun it is on my own sometimes,
Regrettably non of my pool playing family has gotten into the game and I'm still playing just by my self

I also enjoyed this, along with all of the other articles Bert is writing for kozoom. Those who have kozoom subscriptions can see Bert play, as they have a video up of him from the Dutch Championships. He was in the group with Dick Jaspers, and although Dick beat him, Bert won his other group matches and he advanced from his group instead of Jaspers. Ironically, Bert's most recent article was a tribute to Jaspers.
