don't know if they do this but....

Admittedly I do not watch a ton of pool on TV and when I have been watching it on the internet the vids are usually really not very high quality and dont have enough camera angles, so they pretty much suck.

Poker never became popular until they invented the hole card cams where you could see what a player was holding and then watch the way they played a hand therefore it not only had it's entertainment value but also provided a level of education... which obviously empowered people to want to try it and therefore "fall in love" with the game... resulting in unparrelled success for the game...

That got me to thinking.

Now as I said I don't watch a ton of pool on TV so some degree of this might be used. I have obviously seen the pocket cam (useless) and during some broadcasts the commentators would give you the basic strategy of what a player was thinking they wanted to do and what basic english that player was going to be using.

I think that it would be very cool and would probably lend itself to an increased popularity in the sport or at worst and increase in the urge to participate in the sport if they had a few things... some of these things could be added post production if it wouldn't be viable to do it realtime...

1. wouldn't it be cool if when a player took a shot if there was a small cue ball image on the screen showing you exactly what english they were about to apply to a shot? and a small "power meter" which maybe had some red bars maybe going up a cue stick image that showed how much power they applied to a certain shot?

2. "player eye" cams. not sure how this could be accomplished could be as simple as a ear piece (similiar to perhaps a hands free (blue tooth) headset earpiece like for cell phones), or two ear pieces with cameras triangulated to show you what a player was looking at like the exact view that you would see if you were the one looking down the cue preparing for a shot. coupled of course with the above mentioned "english indicator" and "stroke meter"

I think that would not only be very interesting and educational, I think it could certainly ad an additional "interactive" aspect to the game and would almost unquestionably increase the interest in playing the game. People would think "I know how he did that, I gotta try that. I think I can do that".

Thoughts?

Brilliant ideas. Here is an idea for accustats or for the TAR dvds.

Have a special features where there are a couple of racks with Alex P giving commentary as to why he went a certain route and what he was feeling or thinking. For example:

"A lot of guys would use follow here and go two rails this way but there is a possibility for caroming off the six and scratching in the side. I was feeling really confident in my stroke so I decided to power draw it instead with no chance to scratch."

Can't do this on TV because they want you to think it's live.

The tip of English on the cue ball graphic would be a piece of cake though.

the player eye cam sounds interesting actually. give it a few years or however long for the technology to get better and it will be even more feasible.

personally one thing that bugs the hell out of me regarding camera angles is the top down view. Can't stand it and it's over used and it takes all the enjoyment out of watching the game.

I think you could do it post production and no one would be the wiser, when they got down on the shot the cue ball image on the bottom or side of the screen would show a blinking red dot where they were aiming and when they stroked it, the dot would stop blinking and indicate exacly where they hit and for the power meter they could show that little cue stick with the red lines going up and down (in timing) with their practice strokes and wham when they stroked through the shot the red power indicator would freeze at the power level they executed the shot at... Plus that would sorta look like some of the video games (ie; tiger woods golf, lol.) which may attract some younger kids to stop and become interested... win-win.

Actually it's very feasible now, technology is WAY ahead of this curve.

Have you

watched some Japanese videos of Pool. They really make it exciting.
They show 3 different camera angles of the shot for every shot, repeating the shot 3 times.

I wanted to go play some after watching their videos. They really get into it.

I have enjoyed watching 'Classic Billiards' on TV lately with all the old time greats, UJ Puckett, Lassiter, Mosconi, Crane, Balsis. They have been showing from a 1983 production. Also watched Lassiter and Ciscero Murphy
for a World's 14.1 title. Why is Wimpy just known for 9 ball if he won 14.1 titles?
