Doomed after an extended layoff

Hello all, this is my first post. Glad to be here. I have just started shooting again (3 months ago) after an 8 year lay off (married to an evil #&@*? htat hated pool, just got divorced so now I'm rampaging again!). I seem to be doomed now, I can make just about any shot I want and know how to play position well, I have really good form and a good stroke, I have an extensive knowledge of the mechanics of pool. BUT I seem to be having a horrible time putting it all together for some reason. I know I have some form of an ADD going on at the table but I am working on it. It just seems to be a true test to put everything together consistantly. If I am on a run, it won't be long before I will let something slip in the way of form, position, speed or just plain out miss. It is truly embarassing, run eight balls then miss the 9 on a straight in shot 5 inches from the pocket or something silly.Any suggestions on practicing or anything else for a player in this shape after a layoff? Is this common?

I'm 50 years old and single, not divorced. You've convinced me to remain as such. I love Chocolate who is my cat and avatar here at this forum, pool and women in that order. Better don some armor plate.

Doomed

I had my wrist operated on Nov. 13th. My game has gone to hell also. My wrist doesn't work the same so I have to adjust something. Lost about 50% of the movement and 40% of my game. It still hurts like hell when I break, jump, and masse. I am 54 and bones just don't heal like they use to. They removed one and fused four more together. I don't care, I am gonna keep pluging away. I still have a ball. I am even going to play in a tournament this weekend. So what if I do bad, I don't really care. I will be out there doing something I love to do. So don't feel like the Lone Ranger. Have fun, thats #1.

...and probably your virginity, too.

Women weaken the knees, if you are going to be a great player, women must go, buy a dog. They take up less time and are much cheaper to maintain. They are also a lot smarter. Try a German Shepherd, that's the only thing you will ever get true loyalty from on this Earth. :p

Don: I sent you an email.

FL: My Chocolate Cat is truly loyal and eats way less than any dog. And, even though I like women, they're not a priority.

This is the smartest thing I have ever read from larry! Just kidding, your posts are some of the more enjoyable ones to read but I do mean this quote rocks! My GF and I break up and all of a sudden I am playing at least a ball better!

Hey Larry

I take exception to that. My ol'lady been around 28 years. The other day she got up, went outside in the freezing weather and grilled me up a 2 inch NY Stripp steak and some loin lamb chops for lunch and dinner here at work. Baked potato, and a salad ta boot. Gave me a peice of nookie before I left. Washed my clothes, cleaned my house, and went to work on her Medical Transcription business. I got home at 11 pm and she made me some hot chocolate before we went to bed. Kept me warm all night. What a gal!!!!!!
Loves to play pool too. We got a couple of cats. If I had a dog that would or could do all that, I would be on the road with you and wonder dog. I don't know about the nookie though. ;)

OK Guys, I'm taking offense to all of this! LOL My husband will tell you I have been a damn good bitch all these years! How can you put us all in one category?

1. I fetch everything for the family

2. I speak not only when spoken to but all by myself too!

3. I roll over on command.

4. I play dead nightly.

5. I sit behind this computer daily.

6. I beg when his hindass commands.

7. I have always been loyal.

8. I always tell him when I want something or need to go out.

9. I have become more passive with age.

10. Most of all he has my undying love.

Now how can you say all women are bad!

Eyde

I must have married your sister. You are two of a kind!! God Bless Ya Gal!
Keep up the good work.
Don P. :)

take one shot at a time, and don't think about the future or past, stay grounded in the moment, and enjoy the plesaures of small motions. that outta straighten you out.

I'm in a similar situation, i quit playing 2 years ago mainly because of the lack of a pool scene in my area. I have been playing a lot since christmas, and at first i played absolutely horrible, i would play guys that i used to play at a similar level with, and I wouldn't win a game, didnt feel like i belonged on the same table with them. A month later i have become a lot more consistent, but nothing near the level i used to play at. I have been winning money in tournaments though, one day i will play with confidence, but the next i will think too much and dog a lot of shots.
I saw where larry or someone else posted about over thinking things, and this is me, i think way too much, but I try to figure out where my confidence comes from (or lack of it). I have noticed how important my thoughts are on my first few shots of the night, if I'm confident, then i will play well, if i question myself i will play bad, it's just a matter of getting the right mind set to be confident, it's all mental, yes you have to have some game, but without the right mindset it's pointless to play. I'm more and more learning how to enter "the zone" which basically is a realm of not thinking.
One of the drawbacks of taking some time off is the fact that used to you could play, and if you dwell on it, it will lose you a lot of games. You have to take the positives out of it, when i get into the money of a tournament i know that i have been there many times b4, past experience is huge in anything, even if you're skills aren't polished. You remind me of myself, you know how to play, it's just a matter of doing it, I can see what I need to do, but doing it is another thing, you really have to learn how to control you're mind.
I think one cure for this is simply to lose a lot of games and just get them out of you're system, sometimes it's hard to lose but you have to gain something from it, if anything a stronger will to win. Make use of every shot you have, try developing new defensive strategies, hell i pick up things from this forum and try to add them to my arsenal. The key to regaining you're stroke is all in you're mind.

My friends always knew when they saw me at the pool hall I was breaking up or getting one of my several divorces. It's hard to overcome 8 years of bad rolls - takes some time if you know what I mean. But I will say that you just need to be patient with yourself.

After a 20 year layoff (pool, not women) it took me almost 6 months to get back in stroke, and another 6 months to get solid enough to show up now and then. It took me a year or two before I was ready for another real relationship. Good luck to you. The happy ending is that I found the right woman 17 years ago and am very happily married to her.

I quit for 6 years, took me 3 months to get halfway back to where I was, 6 months to get fully back. (I would expect time is different for each individual)

Those first few months it was really frustrating to KNOW what you wanted to do and how to do it but the execution was not there.

I think what you are going through is common
