I was just wondering if anybody had any recent info on Poppa Murph. He used to own Murphys Brass rail in gerogia until he sold it a couple of years ago. I became good friends with Doug over the years at the U S Open and i missed seeing him last year. I was just wondering how he is doing and if his health is ok. any updated info would be greatly appreciated........mike

The Brass rail held a UPA event back in the middle of Oct and Papa Murph was there. His wit was quick as lightening and he seemed to be healthy. It was an absolute pleasure meeting him. I haven't heard anything since then.

I know he opened his home to a few of the players and allowed them to stay there instead of having to get a hotel room. They said he was quite the host.

I'm kind of glad I didn't grow up shooting pool at the Brass Rail. I would've been heartbroken when he sold it. I know that I would've gotten attached to him because he's such a likeable, personable guy.

I lived in Athens at the time the pool hall changed owners and Papa bought it. He really improved the look and table quality of the room. He was always a nice guy and his daughter seemed nice too ( hope her kid is doing good). After he bought it, some nice events were held there and you would see some pros around. He seemed to especially like supporting the WPBA players.

Murphy used to tell stories of being a special forces guy and getting shot up; he was a character. Seems like he's had an interesting life.

Only thing I didn't like about his room was it was 6 bucks an hour to play and when you returned the balls and were about to pay, they'd tell you its 6.42 because they were adding tax.

Tax on pool time? WTF?!

I was at his room for Amateur Nationals once and he put himself out 100% for all us 'girls'. What a sweetie-pie he is. Glad to hear he is still doing well. I am sure he misses all the pool flavor he used to get from his room.
