FYI, I just posted a new video that discusses and demonstrates why the saying “Draw for Show, Follow for Dough” is good advice. Cue ball direction and travel distance are much easier to control with topspin than with backspin. Many drills are included to help you improve your skills. Check it out:

Contents:
0:00 - Intro
0:30 - Distance Control
1:54 - Angle Control
3:51 - Tip Height Effects
4:28 - Speed Effects
5:55 - Pocket Cheat Effects
7:41 - Wrap Up

As always, I look forward to your feedback, comments, questions, complaints, and requests.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the video, Dave. I haven't watched it yet but will later today.

I have absolutely noticed a shift from draw to follow. If you watch a 9 ball match between the top guys from the 80s, you'll see a real lot of draw. No so much in today's game. I grew up playing like that and just can't seem to break the habit.

It seems like draw is more useful in 8 ball than rotation. With 8 ball and straight pool, I do best when the cue ball travels as little as possible. With rotation, I'm going to have travel further and that works much better with follow.

Good point. Controlled draw and stun help you keep the CB on a string better.

I definitely need to expand my repertoire, but my game largely built around drag, stun and draw. The full table draw looks awesome, but I am focusing on being consistent and accurate with 6", 1', 18" draws. I do need to practice drag and stun follows of similar distance.
