Drilling Ivory ferrules

A mate just got a couple of Ivory ferules from Muellers , not having used it before can someone tell whether I should drill at low, medium or high speed (I'm thinking around 360 - 600 rpm on my metal lathe .
Can you also tell me the usual inside diameter when using Ivory and whether it's best capped or drilled through and maybe using a fibre pad ?

thanks , Bazz

Hello Bazz,
I find the best speed is around 1500 rpm's. I drill it to .277 and tape 5/16x18 thread. I also use an air wipe to keep it cool when taping. I also leave a cap, but do drill a small hole [ 1/16], in the cap for glue to come out. A, 1 inch ferrule, I drill 7/8 deep, and then use a bottom tap, and tap by hand turning the chuck on your lathe with the tap in your tail-stocks quills chuck.
hope this helps

I say ditto to all Blud said. Plus I would like to add that I usually drill the hole with an F drill instead of 17/64 and use a H1 Factor plug tap followed by a H1 bottoming tap. This gives you a nice fit to the common tenon threaders that are sold by Unique, Atlas and Cue Man.

I leave an 1/8" cap for a 1" long ferrule & a 1/4" cap on 1 1/4" long ferrules. Unlike some I don't thread my ferrules on. I 1st use the center drill with the lathe running at a fairly slow speed. Then I drill a 1/4" hole & finish up with my final size of 19/64". I use a pilot point drill bit. This gives me a flat bottomed hole. Before I take the ferrule out of the lathe, I drill a glue relief hole of 5/64" through the cap. When drilling be sure to drill in a short distance then pull it out & clean off the shavings from the drill & the hole. This will keep the ferrule from cracking. By the way I use 5 minute epoxy to glue on my ivory ferrules. When you put it on the shaft & trim the edge use a sharp tool with a slightly rounded tip & be careful not to take too deep of a cut each time...JER

Good stuff , thanks all !
I'll probably go the third method as I don't have a tenon compression die although sooner or later I suppose I better get one !
