Dropping weight from a cue

anyone know how I can find out if my cue is able to be lowered in weight?

I have a Linds upgraded production cue right now weighing 19.25oz, but now I decided Id much rather have it 19oz or lower even.

Just pull off the rubber bumber and look under it. If there's a weight bolt you're in luck. If there isn't one, you'd be surprised what a 1/4 to 3/8 inch drill bit can do under that bumper to drop a bit of weight, especially if you want to lose only a small amount. I'm not suggesting that you do it yourself, however. Careful with any drill!

They should be able to answer your questions.

Thanks very much for the help, I think I will have to drill...which is ok I dont need the weight to be perfect...

Linds is hard to get a hold of for me(Im in the US), just because of time zones, and I would really like to use this cue for league tomorrow...

We play on bar boxes though, and Ive got a soft touch on my stroke, and no matter how light I hit it, I get that extra oomph from the weight Id prefer not to have, it messed up a lot of my leaves...

Thank you very much though, helped me plenty :)

hate to bother you again, but any chance you can guide me how deep to go? say just to take off the .25oz?

Im sure that is almost impossible to answer without trial and error....but just curious....

You're most welcome. Instead of lightening the cue, you may wish to go to a softer/slower tip. The weight of the cue influences much more than the distance the cue ball travels. The weight can have a large impact on your stroke as well. What tip is on the cue right now?

I use a Sniper tip(medium I think) but it seems quite soft

I've done this.

1/2" Drill Bit works best

Woods have different densities etc http://www.simetric.co.uk/si_wood.htm

It's about 1" or so for every 1/4 oz. Go slow and check often. Replace with cork and thus you will need to ofset this weight as well...or get a pro.

Note:
Start with small diameter drill 1/8" or less and work out from there once your sure it's straight!

Thanks Nick, Im not sure what to use to weigh it now, but I will take it out tomorrow and shoot with it and see how I like it

Bazooka,

Keep in mind that once you drill the butt out, the wood's gone. I did what you're thinking of doing, falsely believing that lighter was better. In my case, I now know that I need about a 19 ounce cue for my stroke. I lightened up a few cues, and now wish I hadn't. Switching tips did the trick for me.

FWIW, I now prefer the way a pressed Elkmaster plays on my cue, although many other tips would be just fine.

If you're going to play in league tomorrow night, now is not the time to make a change to your cue. Whatever change you make, be sure to get really used to the way the cue plays before competing with it!!

I really wanted to change before hand because I never did get used to the heavier weight, in leagues I shot poor because of poor leaves....

I blame it on the extra weight giving more oomph even in light strokes...because I never have this problem with my 19oz...

I always find myself going back to my 19oz cue....

If I goof it up Ill have to live with it, otherwise maybe Linds can do something for me, he is a good guy, I have him of messenger and we are good friends at this point...Its just hard to get a hold of him, VERY hard at times because of time zones

Got any friends who are into drugs. They will be able to tell you. Just kidding I would suggest going by a FedEx or UPS store front. I'm sure they'll weigh it for you.

It's VERY possibly a combination of the specific cue with the tip in question. The reason I suggest shooting with it for a good time before using it in competition has everything to do with confidence, your confidence that is, in where the cue ball is going to go. Some people can adapt very quickly, others less quickly. Each person is different. Do what seems best to you.

I know what you mean, I am going to make sure to go out and practice early tomorrow...right now Im wondering what dropping the weight did to the balance point....ect

Id like to weigh the cue somehow but am not sure what to use for something so like, but I dont want to let it get to my head either....

One thing I know is that I didnt like it at the weight it was at, so hopefully I didtnt take too much out or something, but to me Im going to try and have a mindset that if it feels good then it feels good....and just not care what the weight is....

Who cares what the weight is?? If you like the feel of it, play with it and go out and win!

a lot of my struggles on the table come from a mental side, especially with this cue. I think I let the fact that I knew it was over 19 oz get to me too much, but at the same time the weight really did effect my play....I just didnt like having bad leaves on soft shots which happened about 90% of the time...I dont have much trouble hitting hard when I need to, its the soft shots and getting too much roll is where Id get stuck...

I have a soft stroke, sometimes very very soft, and with the 19oz cue I can shoot great on a bar box....dont know how it will convert to a bigger table....but I am an avid weightlifter so shooting harder doesnt take much out on me

another thing different is that this cue is forward weighted and my other cue isnt(at least I dont think, as it is not ss joint, and feels much different to shoot with)

I just put too much thought on what Im shooting with lol...

The forward weight, with the extra weight was just too much for my soft stroke, so I really think dropping weight was a good idea...
