I'm not there, but this is what it says at professorqball:
"SEMI-FINALS ARE UNDERWAY
40 players divided into 5 groups of 8 players-playing round robin, games to 35 points. The 30 players who advanced to the qualifications
5 seeded players ? Fredric Caudron, Raymond Ceulemans, Daniel Sanchez, and Semih Sayginer.
The winning bidders in the 3 auctions.
The winner of 2 lotto?s.
Seeded players was assigned to separate groups by random draw.
Top 4 from each Semi-final group ? 20 of the 40 semifinalists! ? Advance to the finals.
FINALS ? Who Advances?
?A? Finalists are comprised of the 1st and 2nd place finishers from each Semifinal Group
?B? Finalist are comprised of the 3rd and 4th place finishers from each Semifinal Group"
So, you see, it was possible to "buy" a place in the semifinals. My guess is that someone else bought a spot and gave it to Jeanette Lee.
(I just noticed that they forgot to include Blomdahl as one of the five seeded players.)
