dumb question on joint thread spacing

I want to get a new shaft for my cue and I haven't got a clue what the thread size is. I've looked at some pictures on e-bay and I think it's 5/16 x 14 but I'm not sure. What's the difference between 5/16 x 14 and 5/16 x 18. And why can't they use the metric system? <---- just kidding

It refers to threads per inch. and the 5/16 refers to the diameter. You can just measure how many threads there are. There is probably not enough threads sticking out to measure a full inch so just measure a 1/2 inch if you can and double it. What kind of cue is it, that should tell you?

I think the 18 in the size "5/16 X 18" means 18 threads per inch. The 5/16 is the outside diameter of the screw. What brand of cue are you using Greenman? I believe Meucci uses a 5/16 X 18. The 5/16 X 14 is used more often IMO.

Do a search for your brand of cue on ebay. The cue's description will usually include the screw size.

Thanks, Jigger, I did that. They have more than one type of joint for thier cues. The Cue is just a cheap Excalabur I have as a back up/bar cue and I wanted to get a 314 shaft for it.

you can also go to home depot. The have this flat metal thing with holes in it, and what you do, is screw the joint/bolt/screw in it and once you find the one that fits perfect you look on the face of the metal thingy it tells you what size in diameter and what the thread with is and also how many threads per inch. it's 4 -5 bucks.

I would like to add that the Home Depot thread measuremnt idea will not work on pool cues. The only screw on a pool cue that you can find at home depot or a hardware store is 5/16-18. All the other threads used on pool cue joints are not "standard" threads that you will find in a hardware store.

Just get a 5/16 -18 screw and lay it on top of the pin on your cue. If the
threads fall prefectly in place like folding your hands then that's what you have. If not it's something else and then you have to go to the ruler method.
The other threads are bastard threads and can't be had easily.

You could match it up with threads at home depot on other screws. If you take say a 7/16 x 14 and see if the thread mesh together with your screw, they don't have to be the same diameter, or a 5/8 x 11 or a 3/4 x 10 it would tell you what you want to know. The diameter of your screw is easy to determine.

Thanks everyone

Thanks for all the tips guys. I got my calipers out and measured it when I got home from work. It turns out it is 5/16 x 18.
