Unless you could remove the black dye by chemical or a sanding method, I see no way to go from black to brown. Vice versa-no problem.

It’s not paint. Without removing the old, you can’t dye to a lighter color/tone...

Mohawk makes a whole line of sprays to re-color and refinish vinyl and leather. I cannot attest to its durability. I've only seen it, never used it.
