I am curious to know if cuemakers dye there own veneers or are they purchased dyed from a supplier? Can you dye your own? If so what kind of dye is used? I would like to experiment with some on my own to see what color combinations I can produce. I am also interested in knowing if any cuemakers have ever done any ammonia staining to there woods?

Many cuemakers buy the pre-dyed, but a few dye their own. There are specialty dyes available (usually in powder form), but I have seen rit dye used successfuly. If you use rit, you need to use a slovent carrier or it wont penetrate the wood completely.

I have not tried this myself but I am told carpet dye will will penetrate the 1mm veneers. The guy who bought Legacy cues said he found buckets all over the place with veneers sitting in different colored water. I bought a few thousand of those veneers and they are fine.
