Earl Strickland at the Snooker World Championships?

For snooker, think classical. Technically perfect, beautiful in form, reserved and correct... and boring as f*ck.

:

I thought you Yanks were all about money and would take up the challenge to walk off with the big pots snooker offers - to get your revenge on your previous oppressors. But revenge and big bucks are too boring for American sensibilities :D

The hardest things for non snooker players to grasp is quite how difficult it is to gain control of the table from the get-go. It would take even skilled players like Mizerak YEARS to develop this, even if he had started as a child and played nothing else. Anyone can pot a few balls but do so whilst controlling the table is insanely difficult. This is why a pool player cannot ever become a top snooker player.

For snooker, think violin. For pool, think banjo.

I asked a world-class pool player from the UK how he thought he would fare if he turned his attention to snooker....

He said he thought if he had a lot of energy and motivation such that he worked very hard at it every day for quite some time, that maybe someday he could be passable (or tolerable or something like that). In other words I think he thought he had it in him to play at pro level but that that wouldn't happen without a very serious commitment...

This was late....at the bar...so the response was heartfelt ;-)

wow, this again?

how many of ya'll need to continue to wanna display your complete lack of snooker knowledge? lol

alex is the best in north america by far and he's barely on the cusp of a lower pro level
some of the top top canadians near his level don't even dream about trying to make it in the uk, the gap is that huge

corey is the best in usa, got smoked last year in the uk, as predicted, mid level amateur at best by uk standards

earl can't win one single match against any low level amateur yet alone pro level...nobody will see him either because he won't make the live tv rounds

So, all we hear about is how our players have such bad fundamentals that they can't even cue the ball well enough to make the long, accurate shots required for snooker. I link to a couple videos of an aging pool player making low percentage shot after low percentage shot, firing them into those funky pockets with authority, now all of a sudden it's, "But they could never learn how to control the table." Lol

You're a blackballer, Tim. What do you know about controlling a snooker table that Miz or Earl couldn't learn in an hour or two with a top snooker.

Oo you need to read my opening statement again.

There's not a pool player alive who wouldn't be playing snooker if he could control the table.

It is STUPIDLY difficult.

No it's not!

Twenty years ago I was quite banger at pool and I started to practice snooker because we watched it from Eurosport.
After 3 months I made my first century break..
One pool trickshot exhibition I got challenged to play 1 frame snooker after the show.. Made 98 with pool cue and at least year break from snooker then..
Last summer I played maybe 3 weeks snooker and made couple centuries.. It's not too hard.
I'm 100% sure that world class pool player make century break at 2 weeks if he get right drills and practice hard.

Getting to pro speed snooker player is STUPIDLY difficult.
But Winning one match race to 3 or 5 is something top pool player can do easily. If he get something like 1-3 month practice..
Of course in long run pool players not have a chance but I believe we were talking 1 match ..
Of course draw makes huge difference because against top 16 chances are really small.

People probably also prefer pool over snooker because THEY LIKE IT MORE!
Totally different games.. I found snooker boring to play in a long run.
Pool I get never bored.

I have a better musical analogy that may explain why Americans have shown little interest in the game.

For snooker, think classical. Technically perfect, beautiful in form, reserved and correct... and boring as f*ck.

For pool, think blues. Free, improvisational, cerebral, wild, and exciting as all get out... perfect technique be damned.

American tolerate classical, but we love our blues. So much so, we even exported it to you Brits.

And playing connect the dots rotation games are exciting, how?

There are many reasons that pool isn't on TV over here. Being exciting is not one of them.

Hey, man, quit them if they're so boring and take up snooker. Lol

I never mentioned TV. I could care less about what people want to see on TV, but I do know that pool captivates me in a way snooker doesn't or else I wouldn't watch 50 pool matches to one snooker match.

There's a lot more to pool than just short rack rotation games. There are tons of different pool games, each one having it's unique set of challenges and strategies. Snooker, well, there's just the one, but if you like it best, I got no quarrel with you.

I don't like it best, but I certainly don't find it boring.

Sloppy,

You should know...

people either love Earl...

or they 'hate' Earl.

I like him & respect his game & what he has accomplished in his career...

especially given some of the hurdles he's had to scale.

IF he was born on that side of the big pond with a similar situation where he played snooker at an early age for 16 hours a day every day for a solid year, who knows what he could have done in snooker.

Best 2 You & All,
Rick

You're confusing emotions with logic and facts. I like Earl, but he doesn't have a chance at doing remotely well in a professional snooker tournament.

I also like Corey, Shane, Archer, and none of them have a chance either.

....I like Earl, but he doesn't have a chance at doing remotely well in a professional snooker tournament....

i don't think that's Matchroom's intent. i think they want him for the same reason he was on Mosconi 2013, and invited to those other 2 European tourneys with Shane.

or maybe they are actually grooming him for the Olympics 2020? wow....wouldn't that be a nice ending for his movie...?
;)

Did I say he had a chance or did I say he could win?

I will tell you this just for you to consider.

Emotion(s) has often spoiled the outcome of what would have been logical.

You didn't, but you brought up the whole people either love or hate Earl, which has absolutely no bearing on the discussion.

It doesn't matter whether you love or hate Earl, if someone's response to, "Could Earl do well in a professional snooker tournament?" is anything other than, "Heck no!" Then they aren't thinking with their heads.

There are two reasons Earl shouldn't get picked.

1. He can't win, and would be hard pressed to even win a single match.
2. There are more than enough deserving players that should get picked.

But like Pink Lady mentioned, it's not about how he does, but whether or not he draws fans.

He'd walk the paras...
