Mike,

I think that is a pretty good idea to have a sliding scale for admission to watch the games. The turnout will tell if the prices are right.

But a five (5) day tournament? Seems excessive to me.

jjnfla, I wish we could get it done in less time but 5 days is just right with the race to 11 format. The 1st year we had 227 players in the event. Matches were scheduled every 2 hours from 8am until 2am each day and we barely finished late Sunday evening. Last year we had 135 players and the matches were scheduled every 2 hours from 10am until midnight and we finished after midnight on Sunday.

If you plan on attending one of these events you are sure to have 5 days of exciting action.

Hi Jake,

Mike (and family) runs a good tournament in all areas but one. They try too hard to support the event including the local motel / hotels. I've played in several and one theme recurs. Regardless of the number of entries, the Viking Tour is out of the host room by 8 or 9 PM Saturday evenings. In some cases, if you are on the "B" side, you must play two matches on Sunday just to cash! I understand the concept but, some players must stay overnight just to see if they get their $30 entry fee back. The five day tournament is just an extension of that philosophy. I see the need to allow the host room to make some money on Saturday evening but at what (whose) expense? All the other tours I play on send you home if you do not make the money or enough money to cover a nights stay at a Motel Six. If the event starts Wednesday, I expect that if I lose my first two, or two out of three, I should be able to leave Thursday, not Friday morning. How do TK or JD run their events?

Mike,

Am I reading this right? Is Earl Strickland headlining a major tournament that is NOT sanctioned by the UPA?

Good luck at the tournament, Earl!

PS, if anyone in the UPA is reading along...I'm still waiting for an explanation regarding Charlie Williams' position on both the "Rules Committee" and the "Board Of Directors"...a clear conflict of interest given Section 5, Article B of your own "Proposed Code Of Conduct":

Section 5. Appeals of Disciplinary Actions
[snip]
(b) Members may appeal decisions of the Rules Committee to the UPA Board of Directors, which may over-rule action of the Rules Committee by a two-thirds majority vote of the UPA Board of Directors voting at the meeting.

Reply to Jake:

Jake, the reason for ending early on Saturday is not to support the Motels. It's to help support the room owner. If we are off there tables by 9pm on Saturdays the room owner has a chance to make money or at least break even on the event. If we take tables that regular customers use we end up costing the room owners table time and any food and drink revenues they may get from those patrons.

The $25,000 event is not like that. Currently the matches are scheduled every 2 hours from 10 am until midnight each day. This hardly leaves any room for table time for the host location. Fortunately for them they have 6 other tables available for regular customers or action.

Ps. All our flyers state the the weekend events are 2 day events. If you play in one of our events, and the field is large like they usually are. Expect to stay overnight.

Well, Poolmouse, I heard it through the grapevine from a brand-new UPA member that Max is going to be filling the shoes of the president of the UPA when Charlie steps down. I was hoping that a person who is not an existing pro player would be the next UPA president.

At the Georgia UPA-sanctioned event, some non-UPA pool players traveled long distances with hopes of competing, only to find out when they arrived that they must JOIN THE UPA or not play in the tournament. This fact of MANDATORY UPA MEMBERSHIP was not made public to some unfortunate pool players who invested their time and money to go to Georgia.

The host room owner at the UPA-sanctioned event in Georgia was in shock at the end of the tournament when the president of the UPA demanded payment for 19 spectators that were friends and guests of the host room owner, informing the host room owner that he must pay for these 19 friends and guests that were in attendance.

The UPA president asked the pro pool players in attendance at the Georgia UPA-sanctioned event to each autograph a pool case which was then sold, with all proceeds going to the UPA. I guess that is the part in the contract where the UPA is entitled to collect monies from the member player's likeness, autographs, et cetera.

The UPA needs Earl Strickland, not vice versa, and it is folks like Mike Janis and the Viking Tour as well as independent promoters who keep men's pool alive for many pool enthusiasts, pool players, and the Five Banned Players. The Glass City Open was a complete success without any UPA involvement, and three of the Five Banned Players were in attendance in Toledo. Frankie Hernandez, one of the Five Banned Players, was enjoying a first-place win on the Joss Tour at the same time.

Thank you, Mike Janis, for all your hard work in keeping the Viking Tour healthy, and congratulations on making the Viking Tour successful.

If there's truth to this rumor, that would mean a self-elected member of both ruling bodies steps aside and another member of both ruling parites steps in...and the members are left out of the decision process...once again.

The drama continues.

Kudos to Mike Janis for providing an alternative to the "UPA Tour". Without this alternative, the UPA would continue to hold professional pool hostage with their highly controversial antics.
