Ebony and other exotic woods

I would like to find out more about the legal aspects of exotic woods, particularly ebony. I am living in Egypt and am curious as to whether it would be legal to bring either a piece of ebony lumber back to the states, or a product that was made using it. there are a few vendors that try to recyle doors, etc. from old buildings that have been torn down or renovated, and I was curious as to how this would work. I don't want to buy some to take back home only to find out the hard way that it is not ok to do so. Thanks.

I guess you would have to check with someone qualified, i.e. customs for the countries involved, but I've never heard of any problems with ebony. The illegal materials for export/import are usually ivory and some kinds of rosewood (endangered).

I bought an ebony cue from the USA and had no problems importing it to Spain even when it was stopped by customs for import duties collection.

Your not trying to bring in a truck load indian rosewood wood that is over 10mm thick.
