edmonton

Pool has really sagged in Edmonton in the last couple of years. Major halls have closed shop leaving the Cue Club as the top venue for play. Most players play at the Cue Club because there is almost always someone there to play. Game of choice is 9 ball. Majority of "players" have slowed down since nothing is really happening in pool. Summertime turns halls into morgues, only weekly tourneys keeping the cobwebs off the tables. Winter brings back the "leagues" and more activity.

Gambling is also way down. It is extremely rare to see anyone playing for more than $20 sets. The top players are careful, rarely gambling with each other, understandably preferring not having to work too hard for their money. That said, however, its not that people are lining up to gamble with them. As you well know, when top players match up, any weight they give is never near enough and the lesser players have slowly learned this, but every once in awhile the "players" egos will allow them to trap themselves. Fun to watch or be a part of.

A few little weekly 8 ball tourneys spread out throughout the city mostly bar box. Most are handicapped tourneys. Lots of top players there fighting for a few bucks.

Ask some questions at the Cue Club. They'll give you more info about where and when to play.

Maybe winter will improve things.

thansk alot..i played a couple guys on tuesday nights....2.00 an hour for pool.....did ok.....not alot of gambkling going on.....theres a big tourny with 10,000 to 15,000.00 added coming up in 6 months...i going to try it out...later

Calgary has definately become the top city in the province for pool, we have the best players, the most action, and the most tournies. Our scene itself is not great, but it is alot stronger here then Edmonton.

The scene is actually quite impressive IMO when you consider where Calgary is located, excluding the SML Open there are no major tournaments within a eight hours drive. We have a ton of tournaments in the city, lot's of action if you want it, and alot of damn good players.

And you are right, Calgary is in the middle of nowhere ... and Sniper goes down with the hard jab :D

Hey, a name came up recently ... anyone in Alberta seen my big buddy Ray Carter lately ?

Dave, from Saskatoon, which is not too far away from nowhere !

There is a $1000 added 8-ball on the 9-foots tourney on Monday (labor day) starting at 10AM at Stix Billiards. I know Mike Stewart and another strong player are comming from Edmonton. If you really want to see what Calgary has to offer that would be a good tourney to show up at. If you want to play in it better contact Tyler Edey fast to get your spot cause they are capping the event at 32 people.
