Pool has really sagged in Edmonton in the last couple of years. Major halls have closed shop leaving the Cue Club as the top venue for play. Most players play at the Cue Club because there is almost always someone there to play. Game of choice is 9 ball. Majority of "players" have slowed down since nothing is really happening in pool. Summertime turns halls into morgues, only weekly tourneys keeping the cobwebs off the tables. Winter brings back the "leagues" and more activity.
Gambling is also way down. It is extremely rare to see anyone playing for more than $20 sets. The top players are careful, rarely gambling with each other, understandably preferring not having to work too hard for their money. That said, however, its not that people are lining up to gamble with them. As you well know, when top players match up, any weight they give is never near enough and the lesser players have slowly learned this, but every once in awhile the "players" egos will allow them to trap themselves. Fun to watch or be a part of.
A few little weekly 8 ball tourneys spread out throughout the city mostly bar box. Most are handicapped tourneys. Lots of top players there fighting for a few bucks.
Ask some questions at the Cue Club. They'll give you more info about where and when to play.
Maybe winter will improve things.
