Efren's Stroke - Video

I wanted to mention this before about different strokes. Has anyone noticed that most of the pro's utilize a wave to their stroke? Their stroke isn't perfectly forward and back like Allison Fisher's, but more like a wave forward wave back. Efren is a prime example of this type of stroke. So is Mika.

What's strange is, even though my stroke is more like Allison's, when I'm jacked up on the rail with a table length straight-in- shot, I've noticed that if I apply a little "wave" to my stroke, then I make the ball more. Does this type of stroke loosen the muscles in the arm and wrist so that the cue stick is applying it's own pressure and straightness to the cueball, as opposed to one's own body doing all the work? Just some thoughts.

Yea, I've noticed that same thing!....what I've noticed is the butt of the cue goes away from the player on the back swing ala Nick Varner. I never knew I did it until I started using video. I try not to thing about it.

Something I did notice about Efren in the video is he was using a slip stroke on that particular shot! something I didn't notice til I watched it about 5 times. Did you guys see it?

hey gerry , i noticed bustamante using same slip stroke . i think its cuz of humidity factor lol.one day i was practicing in my room and it was hot and humid ,so as much as i dont like doing is overchalking my hands ,so wen i went to shoot the cue accidentlyy slipped .it felt very diff but natural so i kept trying to do the same thing and i was very comfartable with that stroke and then i thought to myself maybe thats y they do it hmm?? it comes natural and u kno what no more chalk wen its humid ... what do u think??

Books and ton of books, most Filipinos play by feel. They go for the most comfortable stroke for them. Most American will try to break everything down to Science, but you end up with players whose stance is forced on them.

That's the way I see it also! do what feels right and works for you.

I don't think this is necessarily true. US players may look more mechanical, but I dont think they end up with a stance "forced on them." Look at the most successful US players in the past few years: Strickland, Morries, Deuel, Putnam, Bryant, Owen, Jones, Basavich, Daulton -- they all stroke/stand differently and I don't think any of them look like they're shooting with forced mechanics. In fact if they did, they wouldn't look so different shooting.

Some players have their grip come up to their chest at the end of their follow thru, others have it come up between their chest and armpit, and so on. It depends on your stance and how your bridge and stroking arm are lined up.
