Efren's Top 3 Toughest Opponents

I saw Jose beat Efren 13-4 in the finals of a tournament at Hollywood Billiards in LA.

He is scary-good. I can't imagine what all those American players must've thought about him when they first saw him @ 83. Like... "who the F___ IS this guy?"

I've always liked the way he plays... Bustimonte and Efren ( and a bunch of other Filipinos ) have that stroke-every-which-way-from-Sunday thing going with their right arm ( left if left handed ). Parica is much more "less-is-more", in the movement department.

By the way, here's that match, I believe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPHjfRpvk5g&t=2855s

Yep, that's the one, MA.. strange venue, cameras and people right next to the table..
Parica just went to work. I agree about the 'less movement'... almost reminds me of Buddy.. why go three rails around to get 10% better shape, risking getting hooked, when the shot is there, albeit a little more difficult?

Jay ranks Jose as one of his top 5 9-ballers.

Jay smart man.

Have you ever seen any vids from the Philippines? There's people leaning against the table while players are shooting! Someone told me they toss $$$ back and forth ON THE TABLE during games!!! People are sitting and standing @ 2 feet from the table. No WONDER those guys don't shark. I mean, seriously?

I agree with that philosophy when I play. A world champion told me when I was a kid: "The less distance the CB moves, the less chance it has of getting in trouble." I always took that to heart. I've had people, good players, say, no... play the "funnel" system, so you're always rolling "toward" your shape. But that means, many times, going 3 or more rails. I understand the idea, I just don't agree with it.

Oh yeah!.. one video was in some outdoor patio situation, Efren playing someone, everyone in flip-flops and shorts running around shouting bets, slapping the table, Efren ignoring them... talk about seasoning!?

On playing... I think Buddy talked about CB position, always try to play position where the CB is coming down the line of your next shot.. BUT he was also a proponent of less is more, take the 'less perfect' shot vs. risky position moves.I'll circle back to Parica.. he'll take less than ace-perfect shape, but he knows he can MAKE it...
outsville.
