If the elbow is directly over the grip hand, keeping a straight stroke is simpler than if the elbow is more towards or away from the body. If the elbow is out of alignment, it is harder to have a straight stroke. And the orthodox teaching is that a straight stroke is more reliable and repeatable than one that curves in or out.
 
The elbow needs to be over the back hand. The elbow does not have to be straight (Level). Many players SET with their elbows high.
