Electric Chair

There are no Gimme's in pool and life, You must put in the work at the table and take nothing for advantage. In life if you commit a sin or break the law you pay the price if you get caught, the price serve time, in pool paying the price is losing your turn at the table, and every pool player does not want to lose that turn at the table and sit in the Electric Chair. As it feels just like the real Electric Chair, and there is no pain and helpless feeling to describe sitting there watching your opponent run out. This is why i love the saying Play The Table Not Your Opponent. People say the straight in shots are the hardest for most people, and people take these kind of shots for Gimme's. I know for me i have miss'd Gimme' shots and beaten myself up for it, then this leads to the road of lost concentration, shot making goes down hill and lose of confidence in my game. People who we play the most know our Weaknesses and Strengths and use this against us in a match. So if you play your best game against them always remember there aren't any Gimme's and must take the same amount of time and effort on each shot cause the Electric Chair takes no Prisoners.

Anyways rambling on here, i just wanted to know who hates the Electric Chair forget that i know we all hate that chair but tell some stories of sitting in the chair and watching their opponent run the table, anyone have some good ones to tell.

I went to school at Southern Illinois University (SIU). When I arrived I fancied myself somewhat of a player. I was pleased to find a great pool hall named Gatsby’s that was also a popular student bar which was a perfect fit for me.

I came in to check out the players one of the first nights in town. I was sitting at the bar talking with the bartender, I ask “ so who is the best player in town?”. The bartender points to a player on a table halfway back in the room. He says that is Tex.

I walk back to the table and just kind of lurk. He finishes his game and just turns to me and says “wanna play some?” I said sure how about straight pool to 50. He said OK. I lost the flip and broke (sat in the chair) and he ran 50 out. I said I have to see that again. We flipped, I lost, broke (sat back in the chair) and he ran 50 out again.

I played him every week for the next 2 ½ years and I only beat him once and that was at 3 cushion.

Sheesh, good story bro, i am in the same boat with you as me and my mentor. My teacher is a Math Teacher, and man i love his game. I have only beaten him once in my six close to seven years of playing.

about 3 years ago I am playing in a small weekly tourney. I draw a guy that
didn't have his regular cue, so I let him use mine, race to 6,
He wins first game, I win second, miss and he puts a 5 pack on me with my own cue !!

I not only get to sit in the chair but have to shake his hand and get my cue back at the same time. :(

OUch man. After the third rack i would of said hey you can't use my cue anymore lol.

I play at least 30 medium long straight in shots every day.

A few years back Bob Maidhof hit me with a 124 in a tournament. The worst feeling was when he missed. I fully expected him to run out. I got up and ran maybe 25, and missed a break ball. Needless to say I had the wrong state of mind when getting to the table.:D

I played in a Pro 9ball event in Jersey and had a 6 pack put on me after I ran 3. I think I pissed him off:D

Now I look at the chair as a way to be in the game. stay focused on how I might run out. Look for little rolls in the table or a tough pocket. Just a way to keep in the match.

The lessons we learn

I have played Bob Owen (yes, Gabe's dad and cuemaker) for about 30 years off and on. I have usually spotted him when we played. This last time we a
few years ago, I spotted him the wild 8. We played on his bartable that was in the front of his cue shop (They had 3 GC's too).

Keep in mind, that on 3 different sets, I was on the hill everytime going to 9,
and he put a 4 pack on me for the win, and 2 5 packs on me for the wins.
I was a little upset about that, and it cost me a bag of sand.
