ESPN Comments about Tony Stewart's Absence

My main television seems to stay tuned to ESPN, the Golf Channel, or any other sports-related broadcast. Most times, I'm not cognizant of what they're talking about as it pertains to sports, but my other half listens to sports shows intently like a stock broker, watching the ticker tape for scores of various sports events. :o

A couple days ago, before AzBilliards went down temporarily, ESPN was on my TV, and the anchor man was talking about NASCAR and Tony Stewart. Apparently, some media folks thought Tony Stewart would be in Daytona at a NASCAR event, but apparently his absence was noticed. The anchor man stated Tony Stewart was "at a pool tournament," without elaborating further.

Of course, us REGULARs on AzBilliards Discussion Forum already knew Tony Stewart and Shannon Daulton were making the rounds in Louisville, enjoying the DCC. Tony Stewart must be having a good time at the DCC if he didn't make it to Daytona, according to ESPN.

It's interesting how the media grapevine works. It would have been nice if ESPN could have stated "Tony Stewart was attending the Derby City Classic in Louisville, Kentucky," but I guess that would be hoping for too much.

I happened to hear this too, JAM, and this is what I made of it.

- NASCAR event is more of a tune up for pit crew and mechanics
- "Drivers are 1% of the equation here" - Stewart
- Stewart was attending a "pool tournament" and checking his car's times online several times a day

I was also disappointed that they didn't plug DCC, but not that surprised.

Does anyone know the particulars of Stewart's sponsorship of Shannon?

Tony at DCC

It is rumored that Tony dropped a cooll 50 G's at Cornerstone Billiards for a few cues ,I met him and he is just as he appears on the tube laid back and easy to be around ....When you are the 2005 Nascar Nextel Cup Champion you are under pressure everywhere you go and I for one am glad Tony found some shelter from the media storm . Tony hung out in the room next door to the AZB room and was seen banging some balls around there and enjoying himself . Tony was featured this past year on Nascar Nation or Nascar 360 and they showed his
table at home with Tony saying that between his hectic Nascar schedule he enjoys playing pool with his friends and just hanging out at home ...

We could use that kind of press right along with <insert beer here> Nascar and Pool , A grassroots movement per se'

Interestingly, after a cursory Google review, I discovered Tony Stewart was born in Rushville, Indiana (LOL). RUSHville seems like an appropriate town for a NASCAR driver to hail from. :)

Also, I noticed that one of Tony Stewart's sponsors is Old Spice deodorant, which seems fitting. I guess drivers must sweat a bit during those high-speed races. :p

Hmm, pool players sweat, too. Sponsor opportunities with Mennen Speed Stick might be a possibility for a pool player like Canadian Luc "Machine Gun" Salvas! :D

Tony now lives in his childhood home . I think it brings him back down to earth
from all the Nascar hoopla

As a huge fan of NASCAR (yes, #20 is my driver) and billiards, I missed meeting or even getting a glimpse of Tony Stewart last year at the DCC by four days! Imagine my disappointment when my group backed out of attending this year by only a few days! Even though I have enjoyed watching from home it is just not the same.:( And then as I sat here watching and saw Tony himself in the crowd I was again saddened:( Oh well, there is always next year!

Yes, Tony is not testing at Daytona he has had someone else do the 20 testing for the past couple of years, so that he can also attend Chili Bowl Midget Nationals in Tulsa, Okla. Midget's is were Tony started and I find it very cool that he being as big as he is these days can still go back to his roots! I think it is very cool for Tony to support the sport the way he is by sponsoring Shannon! Must say that is very cool! This is my favorite pic, it is also my screensaver!

For anyone who missed it T got into a pretty good wreck at the Chili Bowl, he flipped his car a few times, I hear there is video of it online but haven't seen it. Seems he got banged up, but is OK.

He sustained some pretty bad bruising and they put a cast on his arm "just in case". Originally, they were going to fly him back to Charlotte so that his doctors could look at him but he refused. LOL, he checked out AMA and went back to the track to watch the feature race. :D

He was getting updates on the testing and relaying the GOOD news about how things were going. (KRG, just in case the media hasn't mentioned that....the testing was going quite well ;) )

While it would've been nice of them to plug the DCC, I think it's best that they didn't. Imagine how many people within driving distance would've flooded the hotel in hopes of finding him.

I didn't ask Shannon what the details were but he did offer up a little insight... he said that it's tight & it's strict.... he said it's comparable to Tony's own contract as far as how Shannon has to conduct himself, etc... now if Shannon could just get the PAY that Tony gets!! :p

Thanks for the update Timberly! I do try to get to NASCAR.com everyday, but during the off season I sometimes miss it!
