Excess tip glue

Can someone tell me the best way to remove the excess glue off of a ferrule after you install a new tip (the small amount that squeezes out after you press the tip to the ferrule)?

I usually get some small strips of sand paper and carefully sand the glue line off while it's spinning on my lathe, but i'd love to know how a professional does it.

Thanks in advance,

I remove the majority of it while it is still wet. What little is left comes off as you finish the tip and ferrule with 800 then 1500 sandpaper.

Pretty much what I do aswell....if there is even a film of glue residue the chalk will find it....

Bluey/Gluey mess

Let's back up a bit. I won't try to remedy your present problem, but for future tips, be sure to clean the ferrule first. You must get the chalk and other residue off before you do anything. If not, you will probably have a stain in most cases, and you'll have to sand too much with paper that's too harsh in order to get the bluey/gluey mess off.
From there, I agree with the others. Take about 5 seconds to completely remove all signs of excess glue after placing the tip. This should eliminate your problem from here on.

excess glue

i clean ferrule first with a Magic Eraser, 3/4" wide masking tape around ferrule, wrapped tight, with just a touch of tape hanging over end of ferrule, then face the ferrule off, getting the masking tape even with ferrule at the same time. hardly ever get glue line under tape, if i do, a light sand with 400 or 600 or even wet sand it

Two words:

RAZOR BLADE.

Ya have to have a little skill though.

Yep, I don't like to recomend It, because as you mentioned It does take some skill, and It's not the safest way to learn or do things, but that's what I finish off My tips with too, It helps to take any left over glue off the ferrule also if your good and steady with it, but I do clean the ferrule first, so no chalk or dirt gets trapped by the glue, then I face off & install the tip. As far as glue, I just wipe that off also, trim the tip down close to size with a tool in the post, and the razor helps with anything left as I'm finishing off the edges of the tip, then there is only minimal cleanup & polishing left to finsh them off. It works for Me, with minimal loss of material, and no unwanted tappering of the ferrule from over sanding.
I crown My tips with just the blade It'self, on a steady mounted in the crossslide, but when I trim the sides, I like to use the handle with the blade for some added grip. I have one with a handle that sits nice and flat on My tool post, so that helps to steady it. Greg
