I have a quite unusual cue from Steve Hebert (pronounced A-bear). Steve has been a maker of pool cues from 1984 to 2003 in Arlington, Texas. Steve Hebert began building one-of-a-kind cues in 1984, and continued to make cues for 17 years (his last cue was made in 2003). Steve´s work was known for his use of exotic bones, ivory and horns. Abear Cues were featured on the cover of American Cueist Magazine in 1994.

This cue makes use of some of his exotic materials and hits the balls very nicely. I was told the wood is Mexican Bacote, but I have never seen wood like it. It has some extreme grain and a couple of light areas which give the cue a great look. The wrap is black with white specs irish linen.

Everything else in the cue is Walrus jawbone/ivory. It has a solid 3/8x10 flat faced Walrus jawbone/ivory joint, Walrus jawbone/ivory rings at A/B/C/D/E, and a Walrus jawbone/ivory butt. Steve signed the cue on the ring just above the butt. There is a very slight lift in the finish at the very top of the wrap, very minor.

The cue is 60" and comes with 2 shafts, both 3.7 ounces and 12.7mm and both with Mammoth Ivory ferrules. The butt weighs 16 ounces. This is quite a rare cue as Steve is no longer making cues.

SOLD!! Thanks!!

good luck with the sale!!

I have owned many of Steve's cue over the years. Used to meet up with him in Arlington TX to play one pocket and let him work on my cues. Still have one of his loaded ivory cue. The white isnt walrus ivory but walrus jawbone. the ferrules are probably mammoth ivory - he loved to use it for his ferrrule. very nice cue...he called these cues his 'signature series' They retailed way back then for 700 with 2 shafts.

Ryan, thanks for the skinny on Steve's cues. This is the first one that I have ever seen and it plays very nicely.

Steve Hebert

you are welcome... here is a pic of his old card and my cue.

his cues were known as players cues in the Dallas metroplex area... he thought Jim Odom how to build cues and 'carry his torch' and sold him his shop with he got a divorce and moved off to Oregon. Steve was a great guy.

Wow, Aaron...that really goes well with the Walrus jaw/ivory in that cue.

I have to admit, that's a good match - Aaron has a good eye for matching colors as is also evidenced in that Runde-era Schon on ebay now. Was it already chipped at the base of the grip? That would bug me.

I know it must be tough to put a grip on a cue, since to do it really correct you have to cut the wood exactly precise at either end or you get chipping. Then I guess you have no choice but to put another grip on it? I watched a cuesmith do this once with Irish linen and it was amazing how precise his work was. In fact he mentioned in advance that there was a good chance the finish would splinter next to the grip, but it didn't. Actually, his work was so amazing I will post some pics in the gallery.

Scott, if you look at my original description of the cue, it had on spot where there was a slight lifting of the finish right at the wrap, before Aaron got it. The cue really did not need or warrant a refinish, IMHO, as it was in great shape except for that one spot. It is nowhere near as noticable when the cue is at normal size, etc as when that area is blown up by itself and you only see that one area. This is a wild cue...the wood is unreal and everything, including the rings, are walrus jawbone/ivory. It also plays very nicely and, although it is a 60" cue, has real nice balance.

Joe, you're gonna make me cry. I had been looking for an Abear for a while, but just didn't have the funds to buy this from you. Beautiful cue!

What are potential problems with a 60" cue? Just balance? Are they primarily for shorter players?

I don't think there are any problems associated with 60" cues, other than getting adjusted to it. I know tall players who use them due to more comfortable strokes with long arms, and short players who use them for more reach. A whole lot of Filipino players use 60" cues, and they seem to do OK.:D

I saw Steve at the BCA North American 8-Ball Championships last year. I believe he is making cues again (not sure if he ever stopped), he moved to Oregon and was working with another woodworker/cue maker. I will try to find his card and get the info posted.

I have owned quite a few Abear's and actually worked with Steve for several months.
There are still some of his cues around here, if anybody wants one let me know.

Thanx

Thanx guys, It came out unbelievable! There is no better look for that cue available. My supplier sends me as many pieces as i want and I hand pick what I need for each cue. The finish was like that before I did the wrap. It's so minor I decided not to refinish the cue over it. I did wet sand and polish it though and it came out great. All in all a true success IMHO. Thanx Aaron 815-243-1101
