Here is something I expanded on the other day at the local room. I was reading information about kicking in one of Bob Henning's book. If you look at the diagram below, the red dot cueball kicks to the side pocket using about 1/2 tip of left english. (cue is lined up from the center diamond and kicking through the center of the 1st diamond).
I thought about hitting balls on the long rail from different positions located off the short rail.
So, I arbitrarily took a position from the corner pocket to 2 1/2 diamonds up to hit the diamond above the side pocket (1 ball to the 15 ball). Moving up the short rail 1 diamond, you move back 1/2 diamond to get the same result ( 2 ball). Middle diamond is another half ( 3 Ball).
If you use the formula of 1/3 of a diamond to the left goes 1 diamond long, you can find that (if you were in the position of the A CB, you take the normal spot, (that gets you to the 5th diamond, add 2/3 of a diamond to the point and kick to hit the 14 ball.
I thought this was pretty neat and just expanded on information that was already provided to fit another scenario. Try it, I am sure you will come up with similar shots of this type from your opponent.
1/3 of a diamond to the left.......goes 1 diamond long
1/2 diamond to the right........... goes 1 diamond short
Test it on your tables. As you know, results can differ slightly. Also parallel line shift to in between shots are not true as you get closer to the opposite corner pocket. Another good reason to practice and find you limits and stroke.
