Experiences/buying directly from Mike Lambros

Tried to create thread from phone and butchered title.

Thinking about buying a custom cue from Mike Lambros. He wants a reasonably significant deposit for the cue, of $500, against a $1600 price. Just wanted to hear people's experiences in getting a cue directly from him.

That's pretty standard putting a deposit down on a cue. What happens if you design the cue with him and then decide you don't want it anymore. Now they are stuck trying to sell the cue for the 1500 that they quoted you. Where as if you had put a deposit down you lose that deposit and the cue maker no longer has to sell that cue at 1500 to get what he originally quoted for the cue.

its a standard deposit from him. I ordered a basic pj, he delivered it fast, within a reasonable timeframe.

The deposit isn't out of line but the amount seems just a little bit high at first blush.
However, if he isn't also asking for progress payments along the way, it seems okay.
I've never had to pay than 25% of the cue-maker's quote when I've ordered a custom.
During the cues' build, I did make progress payments which was more of a convenience.
All in all, Mike is a super cue-maker so I wouldn't hesitate at the slightest if I were you.

p.s. a 25% deposit would be $400 for a $1600 custom cue so a $500 deposit is a fair amt.

I checked my emails and in 2008, I've ordered a custom cue directly from him. I gave him 1/3 down along with my design request and he quoted 12 weeks delivery timeline.

IIRC, I think he was one week early on the delivery. I didn't expect nor receive status update during 12 weeks but he delivered on time and I was a happy customer.

Lambros cue

I have purchased several cues from Mike Lambros in addition to having other work done for me. He was extremely prompt in his delivery of any work. I think the more important question is how good is the playability of his cues. In that regard, I will compare a Lambros cue with any other cue on the market, production or custom. Trust me, order your cue from Mike, pay your deposit, receive the cue approximately when Mike has promised it then you can PM and tell me how great the cue plays.

1-1

This was almost 15 years ago the 1st cue ordered was a smooth transaction and everything was perfect. The 2 nd cue ordered the following year everything was the opposite, the finish date kept being pushed back and back and back everything ended up with me finally asking for my deposit back . Mike sent it back promptly with a nice note apologizing for how things worked out. The cue I did receive played great it had the Ultra joint.

About 6 or 7 years ago I called his shop and spoke to Mike. Heard a rumor he was doing some Sneakies for the Expo that year. Spoke to Mike and he confirmed that he is. He asked which woods I wanted. I ordered a cocobola and a bocote for my father and I.

Met up with Mike at the expo, picked up the sneakies at an incredible price. (Lambros logo and Ultra Joint in the sneaky). He didnt have caps but told me to swing by his shop and he will give us some. We live in the Baltimore area so it wasnt a problem. Stopped by, cut us a couple caps right there on the spot at no charge.

I have heard horror stories but the guy has done right by me. He always makes time to stop and say hi as well when I see him at the poolhall or if he is walking around the expo.

I'm on an order with Mike for a regular cue and during the ordering
process I asked Mike about just making it a full splice sneaky since
they are typically my favorite hit.
He told me he's not making them any more because he doesn't think
skeakies gave the hit that he wants from his cues.

My dealings with Mike were all great, he is a stand up guy and a great cue maker!!!!!!! No worries with Mike.:)
