Extension length preference

I am also 5'9" and hold a 58" cue at the end. I have played full time with a 12" extension for several years and I'm quite happy with it. I find that I prefer the balance with a little bit of length and weight behind my grip location. A well-made extension is hollow with most of the weight being in the joint, so the weight difference between a shorter one and a longer one is negligible. Standard disclaimer: this is what works for me, YMMV.

I use a full-time 3" ext. Works fine. I'm 6'3" and 61" is the length for me. I do not like the idea of putting ext on/off all the time.
I use a 3" mid myself. Have an 8" for the butt of an old Flowers CF cue, but rarely play with it. I can reach anything on the table w that one.

I play full time (for 4+ years now) with a 4" extension. I think I'd be happy with just a 3" one.

If it is for occasional use. I'd get a 4" and an 8" that can be stacked together to make a 12"

That being said, I rarely need the extra 8" and will often opt for a bridge instead. (snooker background, so no fear of using it)

If I ever get a fully new butt and shaft I'd look for a 30"+ 30" and get a 6" extension for it that I'd only use when needed.
