Woundnt the ashes get all over the felt?? Anyway if they were allowed to smoke coundnt they put down their cig for 1 second to shoot?

Unfortunately many smokers will strongly deny they ever leave a mess. {Who? Me? I ALWAYS clean up my mess!} Ashtrays full, with ashes all around the tray, entire trays spilled on the floor, or spilled on a pool table. Little celophane wrappers all over the floor. All night long I pick up after people like they are little kids. I have to clean the tables twice as often just to make them play mediocre speed. The tar/nicotine makes the tables sticky, then the ashes and chalk dust embed into the cloth. Some people are considerate and some are not towards a room owners equipment. How many times would someone leave a burning cigarette on your $4000 sofa burning while they went to the bathroom? Pool tables are expensive to own and maintain, and there are a lot of people that could care less about damaging them. Unfortunately, they are usually the same people that b*tch the MOST when the tables are dirty and have burn marks on them. :(

I think you see where I'm going here Jeff.

The customer must abide by the contract between himself and the owner.

The owner entered into a contract with the community when he started the business in the community. The community has decided it doesn't want smoking in it's businesses.

OK?

This is a good thread.:)

Your post is too accurate. It's mumbo-jumbo like this that gets lost in these threads. ;)

Come on! The SAME things can be said for non-smokers with their sodas and candy wrappers! But since it's SO convenient for you, why not just blame global warming on the smokers too? After all, we do have little fires going all the time.

Re-reading your post, I take it you own or run a pool room. I have run 2. I have never had the problems you seem to have. Maybe you need to 'train' your clientele a little?

Tap Tap, and your employees. Never had it that bad owning a smoking room for almost 30 years.

I haven't chimed in often on this thread but the things you mention there drive me crazy. Don't get me wrong, I'm a smoker & hate the idea of all places going non-smoking. But when I see other smokers abuse tables it really pisses me off, people playing a shot with a cigarette in their mouth, oblivious of any ash or embers that may drop onto the table, or even placing the damn things on the rail so you can get a nice burn mark!

As I said, I'm a smoker but I do know how to use an ashtray. This includes making sure the ash actually goes IN the ashtray & the butt doesn't end up burning whatever surface the ashtray is on.

To me it all comes down to a lack of respect for your surroundings or a lack of class. I know that all these places will go non-smoking one day & as much as I won't like it I will abide by those rules. Even now if I'm around non-smokers in a smoking environment I will limit my intake or just stay out of the way as much as I can. I remember hating the smell when I was a kid & my parents smoked so I can understand the other point of view.

Part of me really resents being told I can or can't do something but hey, whoever said it was a free country? Or world for that matter.

End of rant/ramble.

Hey, now the discussion can turn to statism vs. anarchy...if'n you wanna go there. Good post, TX Poolnut. I was wondering if anyone would go there. I respond with my first argument about that...

Yeah, what you say about majority rule controlling a private business can happen simply because the govt holds the biggest guns. But that doesn't make it moral or the best choice for a society to take or the best thing for pool and pool players. And it doesn't mean it is a mutual contract.

SUPPOSE YOU ANTI-SMOKING CONTROLLERS ARE RIGHT

Let's assume for the moment that the statists' way of controlling businesses creates the exact same outcome of non-smoking (or smoking*) pool halls as the libertarian way might result. Now, the only thing different is that the libertarian way means you are still a free individual. Same outcome, re smoking or not in this example, with the one distinction: You're no longer free via the statists' way; you are with the libertarian way.

Does that freedom matter elsewhere in life? Does the dismissal of that freedom principle create additional problems for each individual and his/her pursuit of happiness?

Society might "fix" the smoking problem, but then what else?

Jeff Livingston

*The majority could just as easily decide to make smoking mandatory, with the same statists' rationalizations used. So, simply because this implied "contract" with the city is possible, the outcome could be disagreeable, not pleasing, to those here in favor of this type of society.

So you will "limit your intake" around non-smokers, but you still expose them to your SHS. I guess that means you have some respect for those around you. You are only going to give them a little bit of lung cancer. You are so kind ! The truth is that you have so little respect for yourself that you are committing slow suicide, and you are taking others with you. Thanks a bunch. We really appreciate it.
