Fargo Ratings to Player Speed

Maybe someone has this information somewhere, but how would we categorize Fargo Ratings to player speed?

For example (ranges taken from Omega Billiards Tour handicapping, but I put in the category):

Above 749: Pro
700-749: Shortstop
645-699: A
570-644: B
515-569: C
460-514: D
Below 460: Amateur

Something like that.

Also, I would be curious as to how many players/what percentage of players lies in each of those ranges.

For example, I am ranked 574. How many players are above me in the world (a whole lot I would guess). What percentile am I in?

This range seems about right. I'd lower the B and C ratings a bit, based on the ratings of some players I know the B can start lower than 570. My son is a B- to B player, and his rating is only 518 in Fargo.

Those sorts of letter classifications depend strongly on where you are. The ranges you describe are ballpark of what they mean on the east coast, and I think the shortstop might be referred to as "open."

But there are very well entrenched and very different meanings of those same letters in other areas. For example in the upper midwest, like Minnesota and Wisconsin, "A", "B", "C", and "D" are all about 100 points lower than what you say. Then above A is AA, which would be roughly 600 to 640 or so. And above that is Master (M), etc.

There is actually no more reason to use these kinds of classifications. If you just use the numbers, it means the same thing everywhere.

Thanks Mike! Any idea if I can get how many players are above me or what percentile I fall in?

Right now there are 10,000 players with established ratings (based on 200 or more games)

90th percentile 656
80th percentile 606
70th percentile 573
50th percentile 515

Be aware, though, that this distribution is skewed toward the players for whom we have been more likely collecting data, the stronger players.

We are testing now our FargoRate LMS software that will get league data in automatically--score with a mobile devise, and so long as there are no discrepancies between home and away teams, data goes right in and is processed in the next optimization. When large amounts of league date are going in, the overall distribution will skew substantially toward lower-rated players.

Mike, do you think you could throw in a simple percentile figure on someone's profile that showed where they were in relation to the overall?

Also, I'd love to see the ability to create multiple "Favorite's" lists.

I know I like to keep track of favorite players around the coubtry, but it would also be beneficial to isolate players in our state league. Most of them are in Arkansas, but a few are in neighboring states. Would be great to just add players to a certain list as they join our league.

FYI, a comparison of the various rating systems, including FargoRate and the standard A-D system, is available in the BU rating system comparison chart.

And more info and resources dealing with this topic can be found on the player rating resource page.

Being pretty nice calling those below 460 'Amateur'. After all, all the other ranks besides pro are considered amateurs. It does sound better then the ranking of beginner, sucky, skillfully challenged, don't quit your day job. :)
