Fargo Billiards & Gastropub hosted the FARGO SHOOTOUT tournament weekend Nov. 13-15, 2009.

A few short weeks after being named the Best New Pool Room by Billiards Digest magazine, Fargo Billiards & Gastropub played host to pool players from five states and two Canadian provinces for a $500 added 9-ball tournament and a $2500 8-ball tournament .

9-ball

Minneapolis-based Mario Parayno cruised undefeated through the 64-player field in the 9-ball race-to-9 tournament played on 7’ Diamond tables, beating Jason Stevenson(), Jon Brown(IA), Jamie Pluta (MN), Randy Byrne(MN), Ricky Olson(ND), and Marc Oelslager(MN) to meet Rochester, MN player Josh Shones in the finals. Shones, a graduate of North Dakota State University in Fargo, had a tough path to the finals. After losing in the second round to Wisconsin’s Gene Albrecht, Shones caught a gear and plowed through nine matches, beating the likes of 8-ball champion Craig Stainbrook as well as Midwest bar table legends Gene Albrecht, Rory Hendrickson, and Marc Oelslager. Fargo’s Tanya DeGroat was the top woman finisher in the tough field.

Hey Mike,

It sounded like you had a great turnout for the tournament. Congratulations!! I enjoyed watching the stream and hope you do more of them in the future. (minus the glare)
I look forward to heading up that way to check out your beautiful establishment sometime.

Wishing you great turnouts and continued success,

Not a bad finish, Mike, especially considering how busy you must have been.

Congratulations.

yea....I drew Lee Heuwagen First round, needless to say it was a short day for me.

I was able to make the journey to Fargo Billiards this past weekend for the Fargo Shootout. I was truly blown away. I am hoping Mike puts together another big tourney soon so the rest of you who backed out have an excuse to get up there. I had been waiting a few months to head to Fargo to see the pool room and this was the perfect weekend.

I am sure there are still "bugs" to work out, but it is difficult to find many/if any negatives. I attended college in Fargo and I am familiar with the city and the people.

I entered the pool room from the side entrance, and was shown a tour of the of the room from the man who set up the tables and spent a great deal of time up there, Jamie Pluta. By the time we made a full lap (and it took a while), I had a hard time figuring out where the front and side entrances are. It was great to see a room with all of the best equipment (Diamonds and Gabriels) and plenty of them. I was really blown away with the furniture in the room as well. The leather couches for some of the "VIP" areas and the players chairs at each table were amazing. I told somebody this is the perfect place to practice straight pool because there is no penalty for sitting in your chair for an extended period of time, because they are so comfortable.

It was great to see how many non-pool patrons were also in the bar. The lounge area was packed around dinner time on Friday. There were plenty of people in there for dinner and having drinks. There were also numerous people on table time and having fun shooting pool. Each night we were there, it seemed at least one of the side rooms were rented out as well.

I was very impressed with some of the wait staff as well. They came around enough to make sure you were satisfied, but not to the point that you hassled. They were extremely friendly and seemed like they "wanted" to work there. I know that is difficult to find people like that now a days.

The food: all I am going to say is make sure you come hungry and you must eat there. The food is amazing and extremely generous portions.

The technology: I liked seeing the tourney bracket on the projectors. This is a great idea.

I know I am probably forgetting other aspects, but there is no way to describe this without actually being there. Every die hard pool player needs to check this place out. I can guarantee it is even a cool hangout for the non-pool player.

Mike, I am glad to see the place has worked out. I am hoping it continues to be successful. It is by far the best pool room I have been to. It is a great experience. I hope you and Rory keep up the hard work and continue to plan how you can make the place even better, if that is possible.

The only suggestions I have are the following: cue holders on the tables. I am not sure if this is possible due to the nice tables and you probably wouldn't want to modify them. I love the stream of the tourney. The more tables that could be streamed the better. It would be good to look into a fancier option for streaming too. It was a little difficult to see what was going on watching through the stream. But you could get a good idea. These small "imperfections" don't even put a small negative in the pool mecca that you have built.

I look forward to visiting again. I wish you and Rory all the success with the place. See you soon.
