Favorite RV Parks with active Billiards Group

Good news!

I didn't know there was such a thing as RV park and pool tournaments mixed together. Shows how ignorant an old guy that rarely leaves Alaska can be. I just picked up a 30' Raptor toy hauler and plan on a couple month trip to the Western states and Michigan.later this fall. I will definitely be keeping an eye on this thread.

Many years ago I played at a couple KOA campgrounds. Never played anyone outside my own family though. I figured game rooms, pool tables especially at those places were long gone by now. Never would have imagined pool tournaments.

I have a 1971 VW campmobile (bus). It's my favorite way to travel. I too will keep eye on this thread. I'd love to hear about pool at some parks, campsites, even if there's just AZ members that maybe live at one and likes to play, etc. That's the kind of pit stop I'd gladly make.

Not Yet...

I've been full time RVing since July of last year and I haven't found any yet.. and I have been trying.

The closest I came is Rincon Country West RV Park in Tucson AZ.

They have a weekly tournament during their prime season (about November thru March), but the level of play is way below what you'd expect at a typical weekly tournament in a neighborhood pool room.

I think the reason that they are my best so far is because it is such a large RV park and they therefor have a large population to draw from. I'm guessing that you'll do much better by focusing on larger parks.

I've found one good park so far but looking for more. I gone to Sundance Lakes in Port Richie, Fl. for the last three years. It's a large nice park 600 sites. The demographics from November thru March is about 77% Canadians from mostly Ontario, and contains a lot of players. They have tournaments Mon, Wed & Fri every week. Mon & Fri 8-Ball and Wed 9-Ball. Usually 40 to 50 players for 8-ball and about 20 players for 9-Ball. The Eight Ball tournaments are Partners (Blind draw). There are 3 8ft & 1 Pro 8ft.

RV Park Pool Leagues

The RV parks from Mission to Weslaco in south Texas have quite a few thriving pool leagues. This winter I played on three multi-park 8-ball leagues, one multi-park 9-ball league and a very popular intra-park scotch doubles league. Also competed in weekly 9-ball shoot outs and several annual tournaments tailored for the snowbirds. Some of the tournaments had well over 100 entries.

These are all age 55-and-over events, and the level of competition is pretty darn good. There were several guys in each of the leagues I played in that could regularly run out from the break, and I got knocked out of one of the larger tournaments by Scott Kitto.

Money games are a little harder to find, but they are out there if you look. Two and five dollar games are the norm, and although that doesn't sound like a lot, it's not too bad when you consider the table time is all free.

Eight foot tables are the most common, but some of the parks have 9 footers as well. Condition ranges from top notch at the park I was at, to about average pool hall condition at most of the others. It all depends on the person in charge of the pool hall for each park. (They are all maintained by volunteers.)

I had been out of pool for 20 years when I first arrived in the Rio Grande Valley in the winter of 2013-14, and the active pool community in those parks rekindled my love for the game. I now shoot at least a couple hours every day when I am at the park, and try to shoot at least 3-4 days a week when I am back home in Wisconsin.

Palm Creek

Palm Creek in Casa Grande, Arizona has a nice pool room with about 6 9' tables. During the season they have a Saturday 9-ball tournament, DE, race to 2. Mixed doubles leagues on Mondays, and other leagues including a traveling league during the week. The level of play frankly wasn't too bad, I went two and out the one time I played a couple months ago!

Ak Guy...Let me know when you get to MI, and we'll make a date to get together! I have access to a great setup with 2 9' Diamonds in a private room in Battle Creek!

Thanks

That is a kind offer Scott. I will see where I end up. I am going to see an old pool shooting buddy of mine.

Chris, do you have the names of any of the Parks you Played at? I'm planning a trip down there in the next month.

The park I stayed at was Magnolia Park in Donna. Some of the other parks that were in our leagues were: Victoria Palms - Donna, Palm Shadows - Donna, Casa del Sol - Donna, Siesta Village - Weslaco, Magic Valley - Weslaco, Southern Comfort - Weslaco, Pine to Palm - Weslaco, Snow to Sun - Weslaco, Alamo Recreational Vehicle - Alamo, Winter Ranch - Alamo.

My favorite parks to play at were: Magnolia Park (equipment in nice shape and very clean balls. The park itself is pretty shabby, though), Winter Ranch (one of the larger rooms), Magic Valley (another larger room), Southern Comfort (smallish room, but they do have a couple nice old 9' anniversaries)

Least favorite were Victoria Palms (distracting over-table lighting and snooty atmosphere) and Snow to Sun (all tables freshly covered in bright red cloth)

Thanks Chris, I'll try to get into one of the larger parks, to insure getting some games!

Yeah, that seems like the best strategy. I'm afraid this time of year the picking gets pretty slim with most of the snowbirds having already headed back north.

I'm on my way back myself. But this year I am taking more time and stopping off at some poolrooms along the way. Spent about a week in Round Rock, and now I'm in Tulsa for a few days or so.
