OK, this has been done in the past, I'm sure, but I have to know.
#1 What is your favorite game to play for pleasure and why?
#2 What is your favorite game to gamble at and why?
#3 What is your LEAST favorite game and why?
My answers first.
#1 My favorite pleasure pocket billiards game is One Pocket. Why? Because it requires skill and it's a thinking game. I enjoy a game more if there's more strategy to it, and in 1P, IMO, strategy is the first priority. I think that there are very few other pocket billiards games that require the fine balance of ball pocketing, banking and both offensive and defensive position play as one pocket. Actually, if I knew more 1P strategy, it might be my favorite game to gamble at also, but nobody to play one pocket with in this part of the country, so I relegate it to being my favorite pleasure game.
#2 My favorite gambling game is Short Rack Banks. Why? Well, because most people THINK they can bank better than they can. When you're looking for a string of 3 or 4 or 5 banks to get out and you have to play position for banks, then it really tests your ability to bank. Just like one pocket, you are required to makes shots in Bank Pool that will NEVER come up in 8-ball, 9-ball or 14.1. Besides that, I bank pretty fair, and I like an edge when there's money on the light!
#3 My least favorite game? This ones easy! 9-Ball. This game, IMHO, requires less thinking and less precision position play than any other pocket billiards game. Position is not so much a priority, rather shotmaking is. It's an agressive "runout" type of game, that doesn't require the players to think much about strategy. Yeah, I've seen some great defensive plays in 9-Ball, but overall, the ability required to play 9-Ball pales in comparason to the ability required to play 1P or Bank Pool. I've also sat back and heard players talk about patterns in 9-Ball... uh, WHAT PATTERNS??? It's always the same!!! 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9.... They may be laying in different positions, but in this game you ONLY have 2 choices. Make the shot or play safe... No strategy at all compared to my two favorites.

Bob
