Feeling bad for playing safe in a bar

I start this from something someone had said in a different thread and didn't want to bust in on their point.
This has happened to me a few times now. I was in a bar that has a couple of 6fters, I sat by the table chatting with a guy I had just met and watching two guys play. I had no intention of playing and the conversation turned to pool, The guy I was talking to pointed out one of the players and said "he is really good" he told me this about 5 or 6 times. As I watched I saw the good player continue to win but miss some routine shots. I think I am getting worked now, the "good player" hear this other guy pumping him up and decided to join our conversation as he played. He asked if I would like to play. I told him I don't have my stick (although it is always in the car) He said "come on lets hit a couple" So I gave in. Again I'm not sure at this point if I am getting worked by these guys or if the "good player just wants another scalp and show his fans he is the man. Anyway I broke an saw right away that the rails were dead, we were playing 8 ball by the way. I ran 3 and totally screwed myshot on the next ball. So I just left the CB on the rail and behind one of my balls. He looked at me as though I had said his kids were ugly. I looked at him and said "hey man I had nothing, it's all I could do" he said to the guy sat at the bar "this guy just snookered me" I repeated "sorry man I had nothing" heres the point he said "well we just go for everything around here" So what was I supposed to do even though it was for no money and just a knock around do I just play a stupid shot and leave the game open??? That mentality as I am sure you all know is common, I do not agree with it but it seems to upset people if you play safe in a bar. Am I being an ass and should lighten up or do I need to play that kind of game when in a bar? I would love to hear your opinions.

I really just dont play in those situations. I try to stick to people that actually know the game. And with dead rails.. you cant even attempt to have fun at trick shots :(

Read the book The Pleasure of small motions. It's a pool book that talks about the real mental game. One of the things that he states in the book is that you need to play based on the situation. I've come to adopt this philosophy just so I don't take myself too serious. Basically he says that you should take certain opportunities to have fun. It shouldn't always be about winning. Sometimes it's about comraderie, sometimes about learning and other times about pure fun. I have found that if I go into the firehall I shoot out of just to have fun shooting we have a good time. But if I get serious and win every game, next thing I know, no one's putting their name on the board. I think in any situation it really depends on how you want to be perceived. Personally in those types of situations I use them to practice shots that I would never take in a game.
Who cares if you lose if there's nothing on the line.

I agree with you guys, I guess I was just wanting to knock this guy off his perch with a house stick. I figure they all think he is good because ge cam get a few balls in and not worry about being left safe or he complains. Like I said I can see your point and thats probably they way I should handle it in the future. However this guy was a little cockey.

you do need to lighten up, depending on what you precieve as a good time of course. myself shoot a bar stick sometimes, not often since i can't stand effin smoke, and do so playing their rules having a great time.

I totally understand where you are coming from. Just remember that in trying to knock him off his perch, it can quickly escalate into one trying to knock the other off another perch. One you may or may not be willing to try.

You can try and edgeumakate him on how the game is really played, but you have to know when to shut up and just have fun. That might be the only 'perch' in life that the guy has. Don't take it away without giving something in return.
You are also correct, it may be the only perch he has and like someone else said why even bother on a table like that. I really had no intention of playing in the first place but I love to play and it was hard to resist. I hate playing on small tables and I think from now on depending on the situation I will just have fun with it on the small tables. I really had nothing to prove I didn't go in there saying I was the best player in the world. I was just another banger.

What is that animal in the avitar?

Fortunately, there are many bars where APA folk play APA rules, even on non-league nights. For goof balls like him, either play a "moral" safe or just lose. If he starts to brag, tell him you'll meet him at the nearest real pool hall and play for $50 sets. Then you'll see how good he is. Until then, he's like a fly. Let'em fly around until you are ready to clip some wings.

Stikapos, I also like your idea. The chances are he would never leave his small pond.

I agree with most of the other posters sometimes you just gotta play and have fun. I play a lot of bar pool due to the fact that there isn't a lot of pool halls around me. I just play to have a good time and most of the time go for all offensive shots. I have found that most people that are good "bar players" are just that. They consider safety play as shady pool.
My freind plays all out and safes people and they get pissed and take it personally. You know that you could play a safe in that situation and come out ahead, so why not just kick or play a goofy shot and keep everybody in a good mood. As long as it's not for cash.. lol

I won't play a safe unless someone plays one on me first in these situations. But most of the bangers safes are not even hitting a ball or a rail but just hitting it a few inches behing a ball. I just laugh and continue on. 95% of the time your going to beat them anyways.

Oh man, that is wild. I thought it was you on a hunting trip, I saw the size of it and thought it was bear then I saw the tail and thought coyote. But then I saw the proportion of it next to you two hunters. Well maybe my eyes are going. That is funny,

The art of Bar Pool

You just need to be a little more creative. Play a safe that doesn't look like you are playing one. It usually isn't that hard to make a banger think you just got a lucky roll.:D

Yeah I actually could have in that situation. Called a three rail bank and stun the CB where I wanted it. He would have been watching the OB befire he realized what happened. Of course Rackem, I would have been just a luck SOB instead of an ASS. LOL, thank you,
