I remember when Simonis felt first started showing up at pool halls and bars. Back then especially in bars most tables were covered in what they considered a durable product with a high knap.MOst notable aomng those were the Valley bar boxes. I have been away from the game fora number of years. I am aware of the faster cloths popularity today. I am however curious as to how many of the bar boxes still have the old style cloth in the bars today?

Depends on the bar. If its a pool hall type bar with leagues, its almost all simonis in my area. If its just mom and pop bar with a table or two then they are almost all the old nappy stuff.

Simonis has been around since, give or take, 1680. That's longer than we have been a country, if you're keeping score at home. It's the bars that are new to the party. It depends on where you are as to who still has the napped cloth, and who doesn't. Many still do because of the lower cost and a customer base that either doesn't care or doesn't demand better.

I disagree that cheaper cloth is lower in long-term costs--it is cheaper to put on, and wears out a lot faster, so you put new cloth on more often, and in the end, it is not any more expensive to use the good stuff.
