Ferrule Problem

Hi. This is a bit of a big problem for me and i hope i can get some advice. The ferrule on my b/j cue just cracked (it's a Lucasi ...it figures) and i HAVE to replace it myself since there is no store or cue repair guy in my country (i'm from Romania) and i think it would cost me too much to ship the shaft to somewhere to get it fixed.SO, what should i do, is it really that hard to change a ferrule (that is if i can order one) and wich type of ferrule should i use phenolic, melamine, Ivorine X, aegis..and so on.I really need your help.Thank You.

Oh and i allmost forgot, what type of tennon does a Lucasi shaft has?, if anyone knows that.

changing a ferrule isnt that hard .. but what tools do you have available
to you ..?

where did you buy the cue at is that an option ?

Type of ferrule depends on the hit you want. Aegis2 gives a hard hit IvoryX is suppose to be like ivory so it should give a soft hit phenolic will give a hard hit also. But if you dont have the tools to do it it may be better to send it to someone other wise you may mess up your cue. But what I did before I bought my lathe I got some lathe pins you can find them on ebay or go to www.cuesmith.com chris has some you can buy them seperate or a full set. But put the pin in a hand held drill get some 180 grit sandpaper and sand down. the closer you get to the shaft use a higher grit you will probably need 180, 320, 400, 1000, 1500, 2000 grits. It hard to do it while holding the drill so if you have anything else that can hold the pins and be powered on without having to hold down a button that would work alot better. But as you get closer and closer to the shaft change grits that way you can get the lines out of the ferrule and it will look have way decent. Also use some kind of 2 part epoxy like devcon 5 or what ever you can get there!

The problem is that i don;t know what type of tennon does a Lucasi shaft has and so i don;t know how to remove the ferrule in a way that i don't damage the tennon, coz i don;t think i can make a new tennon mtself :).That is why i need a professional advice.Maybe there is someone that can tell me step by step how to remove and replace a ferrule on a Lucasi shaft.

Thought you already removed it. Since you dont have a lathe you will need to buy a heat gun. I dont know about there but they sell them in hardware/paint stores here for about 30 bucks. Heat the ferrule then take a pair of plyers and pull the ferrule off! Slowly!! Maybe you can become the only repairman there and make some extra cash!

JACK POSTED THIS IN THE OTHER THREAD YOU STARTED IN THE MAIN FORUM!!

hello, from the USA,,,Lucasi uses an Ivorine III ferrule that's supposed to be guaranteed for life (not much help to you in Romania !?),,,if you have a friend with a lathe, the ferrule can be cut off and replaced with your choice of new ferrules without much problem (be careful not to mar or scratch the shaft),,, the tenon is 5/16" , 0.3125" (slightly smaller than 8mm),,,generally Lucasi products have few defects,,I have never seen an Ivorine ferrule crack before ,,,hope i helped in some way,,,,,,,,jflan

I posted in bolth so i can cover a bigger area of response :), and it would be nice if i can do it myself so i can learn how to do it for others :).The thing is that when i bought the cue the guy who sell it advertise it with Aegis ferrule and that's why i'm a bit confused.I though aegis it's pretty hard ,and the tip on the shaft is small but not that small.Maybe i can get some pictures for y'all to see :).

SO, i want some usefull adivce on removing and replacing one without a lathe.

There is no good way to do it without a lathe. You have to be able to trim the ferrule to size after it is installed, and without a lathe you are going to butcher it.
You could make a device for turning shafts fairly cheaply, I did so when I first started, using a drill strapped to a board. While still very crude for ferrule work, you can at least keep them round.

I thought that would catch you attention :)) ya'll...no not many people say it this way , but some of them do including myself.Back to the problem.
Is there anything that can help me learn to do some repair work on my cues, install tips change ferrules , clean shafts...there is no one here that can do that and i think we must begin somewhere. But i am talking about something that would be also cheap, i don't know if i mention this but the level of income in my country is not that high, the minimum wage a month here is less then 200$...so imagine i don't have a lot of money to spend :).

I think you could build a machine for working on shafts very cheaply
BUT it all depends on how resourcefull you are .
and what tools you can get your hands on to make these items.

there may not be any cue repair guys in romania but there has to be
lots of machinist there as it is one of the top ten machine tool
producing countries in the world

Yep, those things on ebay look nice, but can i fit an Uni-Loc shaft on one of them?, or maybe they come in uni-loc too ?.
I will go hunting for a steel lathe here to see what i can come up with and then i will come back with more questions :)).

I wa able to remove the ferrule , but to my surprise it has a threded tennon (someone here told me that it was not threded), so to repalce it with a new one i have to thread the new ferrule to match the tennon.I think i maybe ask some wood guy here for adivice on threading. What do you guys say?
OH...and where can i order some ferrules and tips that would ship to Romania, i mail Chris Hightower but he hasn't answerd, and he doesn't accept card payment :(.

You can check with Atlas Billiards, they are supposed to be the only ones with the Ivorine 3 ferrules.
But they have a $50USD minimum order i believe.
And i don't know if they will ship overseas or not, but it's worth a try.

Personally I think you should contact lucasi i think there USA based office
is in the state of Florida and let them know of your situation
ALSO let them know youve been posting questions about it on the AZ website they should be good enough to mail you a new threaded ferrule and tip since you will be putting it on , they do guarentee their cues
if they will do that all you really need to worry about is finding a lathe to trimm and sand it smooth after glueing it on

Hightower and most big cuemakers and suppliers are most likely at the valley forge tournement and expo that is this week
